President Carter named Azie T. Morton of Texas to be treasurer of the United States. Morton, formerly with the Texas AFL-CIO in Austin and now staff assistant to the House District Committee, would hold the treasury post possibly combined with the Mint directorship.

Businesses expect higher 1977 capital spending

Commerce Department reports a small rise in projected 1977 capital spending. Businesses now anticipate $135.3 billion for the year, up six tenths of a percent from March estimates.

Norfolk charter boat tragedy leaves deadly toll on Chesapeake Bay

A 42 foot Dixie Lee II charter boat faced a 10 to 13 foot wave in Chesapeake Bay despite thunderstorm warnings. Four people drowned and nine are missing while 14 others were rescued. Coast Guard reported the calamity occurred after the vessel listed to starboard and sank.

Snyder Tractor Pull plans queen contest for July 4 event

The Scurry County Industrial Foundation discussed housing and business prospects in Snyder. Officials said several firms signed leases at Varsity Square Shopping Center and multi family units are planned. The Snyder Chamber of Commerce now accepts applications for the 1977-78 Tractor Pull Queen with finalists to be judged at the National Finals in Fort Worth in March 1978.

Snyder High School Class of 1927 Holds 50th Reunion

Seventeen members gathered for a luncheon and afternoon of reminiscing at The Shack after registration. Rev. Harvey Carroll delivered the invocation, Mrs. Guy Stoker welcomed the group, and Mrs. Frances Stockton read the class roll. Mrs. M. W. Pilcher asked for a moment of silence for nine departed members.
