Texas Legislature Closes Session Early Amid Veto Drama

The 61st Texas Legislature adjourns at 3 p.m. ending a 140 day session. Gov. Preston Smith hesitates on a $10 use fee and the one year appropriations bill amid veto speculation. The body approved a minimum wage bill and a teachers pay raise funding plan. Additionally 27 new district courts are authorized across major cities and counties.

County Reaccredited Tuberculosis Area Status Restored

The Texas Animal Health Commission has reaccredited Scurry County as a Modified Accredited Tuberculosis Area. Executive director Dr. James B. Henderson said the six year certificate was presented to County Agent Billy Roach. He thanked local residents for cooperation and urged continued support to maintain the status.

Thermometer Records Sharp May Heat Then Cool Front

May brought a torrid spike at the Snyder Water plant with a Saturday high of 100 degrees. A cool front arrived pushing readings to 46 degrees by Sunday morning, with mild lows around 54 degrees continuing through this morning.

Criticism grows over Nixon antimissile plan

Washington AP reports broad criticism of the Safeguard antimissile system from both parties as Senate debate nears. Sen. Stuart Symington accuses the Defense Department of public and private contradictions and suggests a chart could end the debate by showing more research is needed. Sen. Charles Percy calls for a deployment moratorium while Sen. Edward Kennedy charges the program may cost at least 20 billion dollars. The first Safeguard sites are planned for North Dakota and Montana.

Viet Cong shell Saigon. adviser killed in highland rocket strike

Viet Cong shelled Saigon for the first time in two and a half weeks and fought paratroopers and militiamen outside the city. An American adviser was killed in a rocket attack at the Dak To air field as rockets hit the field and several soldiers were wounded. Casualties included one American killed and twelve wounded. six enemies killed and three captured in exchange fire. The raid comes amid ongoing fighting near Saigon and in the central highlands.

Nixon seeks two year extension for antipoverty program

The Nixon administration urged a two year extension of the federal antipoverty program with $2 billion in the first year. Donald Rumsfeld told the House committee the President favors a longer extension to improve management and fund allocation. The administration aims to study program effectiveness and coordinate with Model Cities and state governments to boost poverty relief.

Summer Library Programs at Central and West Elementary

Two library programs run in June and July at Central Elementary and West Elementary. Libraries will be open Tuesdays Thursdays and Fridays from 9 am to noon for Snyder elementary students next year to check out books and enjoy films filmstrips and listening activities. Preschoolers entering first grade will have a story hour at 10:00 on Thursdays with qualified staff supervising.
