Two Soviet cosmonauts Vladimir Kovalenok and Alexander Ivanchenkov performed a two hour five minute space walk to replace equipment and test a new semi hard space suit on the Salyut 6 station. Both reported in good health after the excursion.

President Carter released ten broad principles for a national health insurance plan that would not start spending for over four years. Sen Edward Kennedy and labor allies withdrew support, faulting Carter for weak leadership and insufficient, late plans that fail to meet the goal of a true national program. Kennedy blamed the phased approach and a possible kill-off option for the split.
A suspect is jailed in San Diego in the murder case of Lonnie Ray Elder, 28, of Snyder. Elder’s body was found near the city dump with stab wounds. an 18 year old is in custody as authorities prepare a murder warrant. Autopsy was ordered and the body sent to Dallas for analysis.
Pre registration for fall classes at Western Texas College runs Wednesday through August 25. Dr. Duane Hood announces registration for 8:30 to 12 and 1 to 4:30 weekdays. Students register at counselor offices in the Student Center and pay fees at registration. Classes start September 5 with extension centers in Haskell Crosbyton Rotan and Sweetwater opening September 7.
Snyder National Bank announces a major expansion at its Avenue R and 25th Street building. The plan adds about 6,000 square feet, enlarges loan officers offices, and moves the president’s office to new space. A. Quincy Jones Associates accountants oversee design with bids hoped in September. no cost estimates yet.
