On Friday in London, gold rose to just over 200 dollars an ounce marking an all time high in early afternoon trade. A dealer noted 200.05 dollars as bullion traded actively with U S buyers entering the market as the dollar weakens on foreign exchanges.
Washington AP reports a 16.2 billion tax-cut bill advances to the House floor after Ways and Means approval 25-12. The measure would give about 12.3 billion in individual income tax relief with the rest to corporations, while President Carter opposes capital gains tax cuts. In Austin AP, Texas House debate on a property tax relief constitutional amendment stretches into a marathon with lawmakers approving a plan to reimburse school districts for revenue lost from homestead exemptions as debate continues.
The United States and Canada advise their citizens to depart Lebanon amid threats of further Syrian attacks on Lebanese Christians. The U S Embassy scales down staff and sends diplomats' families home but reports no plan to evacuate the 1,500 to 2,000 Americans currently in the country. Those with no pressing business are urged to depart.
