Negro Man Killed at Lake J B Thomas Shootings Prompt Murder Charges
District Attorney Wayland Holt filed murder and assault with a prohibited weapon charges in Gale County after Charles Henry Banks 34 a Negro farm laborer was shot twice at Lem's Bait House on the north shore of Lake J B Thomas. Marjorie Humphries of Grassland Tex held in Scurry County jail after surrendering to Sheriff Earl Abercrombie. Banks died on arrival at Cogdell Hospital. Banks is survived by a five year old son Charles Jr two sisters and two brothers. Humphries said they had lived on a Grassland farm and that Banks had threatened her with a tire tool before the shooting.

Train wreck kills 85 in Portugal near Oporto
A derailed two car diesel train plunged down an embankment near Oporto on Sunday night killing 85 and injuring more than 100. The rear unit snapped its couplings and overturned beside the track after a curve, while witnesses reported it fishtailed and crushed passengers as walls collapsed.

The Pearsall area 60 miles southwest of San Antonio received usable overnight rain. Pearsall recorded 1.20 inches with spots around South Texas reaching up to 2 inches. Batesville, 35 miles west of Pearsall, was touched by a wind storm that slightly damaged a small airplane. Local Guard Unit Honored At Camp
The Snyder National Guard unit returned home with a Fourth Army evaluation ranking of 93.10 placing fourth among about 150 combat units at Ft Hood. Abilene D Battery led Texas with 94.35.
