At 2 am in East New York a moving car with four Negroes fired on two white men wounding one abdomen and another buttock. Police reports say 15 arrests as disorders spread and police fear more violence amid nightly racial strife.
Washington AP President P L Roy Siemiller of the striking machinists union called today's talks fruitless as 35 000 members shut down five major airlines. He said strikers are determined and received many telegrams urging perseverance while negotiators offered verbal accusations and little progress. James J Reynolds said talks were back on strike issues, but Siemiller doubted any real discussion occurred.
Heavy rains drenched parts of the Panhandle as a cool front moved through and stalled near Wichita Falls. Amounts included Spearman 2.48 inches, Canadian 1.31, Lipscomb 1.21, Stratford 1.04, Clarendon 0.54, Higgins 0.85, Shamrock 0.66, and Follett 0.94.
The United States rejected a Soviet protest on Haiphong bombing and urged Moscow to help force North Viet Nam to halt aggression and begin peace talks. It accused Russia of inaccuracies and of supplying petroleum products aiding North Viet Nam’s attack on the South. The State Department delivered the reply today via John C. Guthrie in Moscow.
Senator Russell Long announced a public inquiry on drug prices and federal health programs. He argues brand name prescribing drives monopoly and supports a bill to require chemical generic names for Medicare drugs to cut costs. He noted 44 states restrict generic-name sales when brands are prescribed.
Helicopter-inserted U S troops struck a dug-in Viet Cong force 25 miles north of Saigon and overran bunkers in fast action. Marines further south reported 55 NVA killed in eight days of heavy fighting near the DMZ.
An explosion at the Siltex mine of New River Co. in Mount Hope West Virginia killed one miner and left six missing. Officials said 20 to 23 other miners inside the mine were safe.
The city faced a fifth night of unrest with gunfire, arson, and looting in the East Side Negro area. A 29 year old Benoris Toney was critically wounded by a shotgun blast as riot police and National Guardsmen tightened patrols. Mayor Locher declined martial law despite calls from Negro leaders and a tougher weekend looms.
Comfort Texas reports the death of 55 year old Robert Tarvin after a wheelbarrow tire exploded while he was helping pour cement. He removed the tire to a filling station to add air when the rim flew off and struck him in the head.
The 30th Annual Snyder Rodeo ended with a strong final performance Saturday after Friday’s events. Notable results include Buttons Howard of Portales posting the best time in open calf roping at 9.8 seconds and Debbie Ferguson of Petersburg leading girl barrel racing with 18.3 seconds. Judy Detheredge of Anson clocked 18.4 in barrel racing, Marie Voss of Snyder 18.7, Jack Kirkpatrick of Post 14.5 in team roping, G B Williams 32.8 in stock holders roping, Bob Zachry of Henrietta 45 points in bareback riding, and Johnny Glass of Lubbock riding saddle bronc.
Guerrillas shelled the Da Nang area near the U S Marine heliport Seabee hospital complex. Four helicopters were damaged and seven wounded at the heliport, with three wounded at the Navy Hospital and four more at the Seabee site. No fatalities reported.
Snyder area shows a Friday high of 98 and low 76 with 7 am reading. North Central Texas expects partly cloudy skies with scattered showers mainly overnight and Sunday, highs 94 to 101 and lows around 76 to 82.
President Johnson flew into the Midwest and urged an end to rioting by big city Negroes saying violence breeds tyranny and harms reform. He praised ballot box protest and neighborhood committees as proper channels while defending Vietnam policy and inflation actions.
