La Depeche de Tahiti reports France carried out its most powerful underground nuclear test in Tahiti on the previous Wednesday. Paris Defense Ministry spokesman would not confirm or deny the claim.
In Jersey City and California dissident postal workers staged protests and pickets defying union approval of a tentative contract. About 30 sign-carrying demonstrators gathered near the San Francisco bulk mail facility while in New Jersey operations at the New York Bulk and Foreign Mail Center were crippled for a second day. The protests disrupted mail handling and pressured officials amid ongoing labor tension.
The SDN Column notes six million recreational vehicles on roads this summer and Snyder hosting rallies for Airstream and Winnebago clubs. It recounts visitors Jerry and Earl Odell of San Antonio and mentions the town’s growing reputation among RV groups. Also referenced are June earthquake impacts, 100 degree heat waves, Abilene’s liquor election, and local reactions.
Mr and Mrs Cristo Reyes of Guatemala recount the 1917 and 1973 quakes to their Snyder host family. Hector Melgar translates as the couple notes the 7.5 magnitude 1973 event woke them from sleep, destroying their home and prompting relocation and ongoing rebuilding while they credit fate or acts of God for their survival.

HEW regional office in Dallas will contact school officials post fall term. Hood notes Snyder uses no federal funds for athletics.
Rep. Wayne Peveto aims to tie tax relief constitutional amendments to the success of his property tax reform bill. He claims eight sure votes on the Ways and Means Committee and plans for action Monday. The measure already faces opposition from realtors and farmers and would affect rural land taxation and $10,000 homestead exemptions.
Weather bulletin notes Snyder temperatures with a Friday high of 96 and a Saturday 7 am reading of 75, no precipitation, and year-to-date total 12.10 inches. West Texas expects widely scattered showers and thunderstorms in the Panhandle Monday and Tuesday, otherwise mainly partly cloudy with near normal temperatures. Highs reach the 90s to around 110 in Big Bend, with lows in the upper 60s to lower 70s.
Grover Eaton, general manager, reports the American Magnesium Company in good health on its 10th anniversary. Production hit a May record and a facelifting program is to finish soon. Five workers have started on a metal production building at the plant southwest of Snyder. Eaton says the site is unique and unmatched in the world.
The 43rd annual Scurry County Rodeo concluded with winners splitting about $28,000 in cash and prizes. Cowboys from Texas New Mexico and Oklahoma competed Wednesday through Friday in bareback riding tiedown calk roping and other events while the field faced bulls broncs and calves. Perry Lee Henrietta led bareback scoring 63 with James Peniston Fort Worth at 60 as others were scoreless. Bob Campbell El Paso led tiedown calf roping at 10.5 seconds with Gary Ashford at 11.4 seconds. (See Rodeo page 2.)
