U S Marines fought through the night against a crack North Vietnamese 324 B division in the jungles near the 17th parallel. By dawn Marine planes limited the enemy escape toward Laos as the toll rose over 1,000 killed in eight days of fighting.
Armed National Guardsmen patrolled the East Side as four days of unrest spread from shootings to arson and looting. More than 85 fires were set by gasoline bottles, while police and 1,000 guardsmen maintained order around the two square mile riot zone.
In East New York hundreds clashed with police using guns bottles and rocks. An 11 month old Negro boy Eric Dean was killed by a sniper shot as tensions between Black Puerto Rican and Italian communities flared. Police reported injuries to ten officers four firefighters and three residents.
Light showers touched northeast Texas in the early morning but the heat persisted with highs up to 110 in Presidio and 105 in Childress and Wichita Falls. Other readings included 103 in Waco 102 in Abilene Amarillo Lubbock Mineral Wells San Angelo and 100 in College Station Laredo and Wink. Scoped shower area reached Sherman Paris Mount Vernon McKinney and nearby Dallas Waco Tyler regions with more heat expected.
Three people died in a crash near Lubbock Texas when a farm road vehicle collided with a southbound car on U S 87. The victims were Finley Thomas Rogers 51 and his wife 43 of Roby Route 1 and Ross Allen Woodson Jr 24 of Lubbock. Woodson was the son of a longtime local publisher. No survivors.
U S officials say North Vietnamese troops may be moving across the demilitarized border into South Vietnam as monsoon rains hinder the Laos infiltration route. Evidence since May suggests three Communist regiments totaling about 4,500 men in the zone below the demilitarized area, with two North Vietnamese and one Viet Cong confirmed.
The Blackstone Rangers leader Lamar Bell and rival East Side Disciples chief Ninja Shead pledged reform with Police Supt. O W Wilson after a news conference. Hours later three youths were shot, including Ronnie Rogers 14 and Lionel Henry 15, amid gang violence.
The second performance of the 30th Scurry County Rodeo featured top rides by Robert Taylor Sweetwater 61 Booger Bryant Happy 56 and Jerry Kidd Odessa 55. Speeds in calf and stock events followed with Royce Kitchens Ranger 13.6 Bill Zimmerman 14.2 Rufus Hart 14.7. Marie Voss Snyder led girls barrels 17.8 tying Martha Josey Post for opening night. Third performance starts at 8 tonight west of town.
Reading Thursday shows 97 high and 74 low with 78 at 7 am. North Central Texas expect partly cloudy skies with scattered showers today and tonight and highs 94 to 103. Northeast Texas sees similar conditions with lows 73 to 79 and highs in the 90s. Northwest Texas remains clear to partly cloudy with late showers in Panhandle and cooler north Panhandle Saturday. Coast winds 8 to 18 knots. South Central/Southeast Texas warm with showers today and Saturday. highs 88 to 102 and 92 to 102 respectively. Southwest Texas stays clear to partly cloudy with highs 94 to 102.
A Lancaster man shot his wife in the Braniff Building at Exchange Park Dallas, then killed himself after a gun battle with two men including Exchange Park security Chief J S Daniels. The wife Pat Vinson was wounded and hospitalized in critical condition.
In Plainview Texas deputies broadened the search for Judy Hunt 16 and Jimmy Don Parker 25 after Parker helped the girl escape from Hale County jail. Parker previously served two burglary terms. They fled with a gun aided by a trusty whom Parker confronted. Bloodhounds from Lubbock and Tulsa aided the manhunt.
Navy Cmdr. John W. Young and Air Force Maj. Michael Collins return to Cape Kennedy after 70 hours 47 minutes in space. They docked with an Agena satellite, reached 476 miles, performed two spacewalks, and retrieved a micrometeorite impact recorder. They landed near Cape Kennedy then rode a helicopter to the Guadalcanal.
A Walla Walla couple asked at Vancouver city hall if their motel reservations were ready. The desk clerk explained that although the new City Hall resembles a motel, it is not one.
Joyce and Janet Lindsey ten year old twins from Landrum South Carolina underwent a twice postponed kidney transplant at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. The operation began at eight in the morning and was expected to last about six hours. The sisters have been doing well while awaiting the procedure.
