Washington AP reports the Senate ready to pass the first part of President Carter's energy plan. The bill would require many power plants and factories to switch from oil and natural gas to coal and would ban outdoor gas lamps by 1982. It marks the initial section of a five part energy package moving toward final votes.
Moscow reports Anatoly Filatov, a Soviet administrative worker, was sentenced to death by firing squad for spying. Tass describes him as an agent of a foreign intelligence service. The ruling followed a week of high profile trials in which dissidents Shcharansky and Ginzburg received labor camp terms of 13 and eight years.
In Abilene the wets push to overturn a dry ruling as Taylor County officials toss out over 800 ballots in a precinct dispute. Wets seek a district judge order to canvass all precincts and declare the election results on alcohol sales for on and off premises.

Melodie Lavonne Mata 22 of 1901 Coleman St died when her 1975 Dodge collided with a northbound propane tank truck on a gravel road west of Ira. The crash occurred about 3:20 p.m. Thursday, with tank truck occupants Dan Edd Thompson 26 and Sara Kulapaca 20 injured but free of critical harm. Police indicated propane release was contained by opening valve vents. Funeral services for Mata set for Sunday at Bell-Seale Chapel. she is survived by husband Johnny Mata and two children, Erica and Heath, plus her mother and siblings. The incident marked Scurry County’s third traffic death of the year.
President Carter and West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt condemned Soviet actions against dissidents such as Anatoly Shcharansky and others. They said the protests would not be silenced and cited broader human rights violations in Eastern Europe, noting the Helsinki Accords and recent Geneva talks.
