Senator Robert A. Taft acknowledged defeat after a bid for the Republican presidential nomination. He said this would likely be his last run, pledging loyalty to Eisenhower but noting uncertainty about campaigning for the ticket or his Senate leadership in the aftermath. Taft planned a rest trip to Murray Bay before returning to Washington.
A third polio case in Snyder during 1952 was reported by Hendrick Memorial Hospital. David Patterson Wells, 18 months, son of D. P. and Mrs Wells, is in good condition after treatment at Abilene hospital with no paralysis. Attendants note two prior Snyder cases improving, including Eddie Wilson, 19 months, in Fort Worth hospital and Raymond Webb Jr., stricken July 5, greatly improved and likely to be discharged soon.
A brief rain event yesterday afternoon dropped about an inch over Snyder, with the year to date reaching only two inches. July totals show .39 inches across three showers, marking a light month for precipitation.
Flames and explosions engulfed the Union Oil Refinery pier and two tankers, the Victor H. Kelly and Lompoc, as 30 plus injured and two missing were reported. Captain Eugene Fulton died, and damage was estimated at five million dollars.
A strong ammonia odor near a dress shop caused a general alarm at 9 last night. Firefighters from paid and volunteer units responded, crowding the square before investigators confirmed the source as leaking ammonia from an air conditioner.
Sgt. Tony K Burris of Blanchard Oklahoma earned the Medal of Honor for two days of gallantry on Heartbreak Ridge in Korea. He twice refused medical aid after being wounded and led a charge that killed 15 enemy fighters and secured the ridge. His parents will receive the decoration at a Pentagon ceremony on a date to be announced.
Detroit acting mayor Louis Miriani sent telegrams to mayors of New York Boston Philadelphia Cleveland Chicago St Louis and Los Angeles proposing separate turnout contests for the primary and the November election The winner would be the city with the highest voting rate relative to its 1950 census population St Louis Mayor Darst accepted vowing to top the others.
President Truman urged more volunteers to man around the clock lookout stations starting Monday to watch for air invaders in 27 states. About 150,000 volunteers will operate from roughly 6,000 stations as part of Operation Skywatch to deter a potential long range strike amid Cold War tensions.
The Boilermakers Union picnic near Portland drew several thousand attendees when food poisoning broke out. Within hours about 70 people were taken to Portland hospitals for treatment though none were thought to be in critical condition. Ambulances rushed to the grounds as police set road blocks to control traffic.
A 13-pound son was born Saturday morning to Mr and Mrs Pollard Whimbush at Avenue H residence. The child was delivered by Mother L L Norris pastor of the Colored Holiness Church at 4 45. The midwife reported it as her 302nd safe delivery. Mother and son are doing fine.
Government approval of about five dollars a ton for steel raised hopes of a near settlement to the 41 day locked out strike. CIO USW leader Philip Murray and industry negotiators rushed between meetings in Washington and Pittsburgh as talks continued with no comment on timing or impact of the price boost. Murray said no further meetings tonight and hinted a statement may come tomorrow to explain the situation.
The Colorado River Municipal Water District will rename the Southwest Scurry County lake J. B. Thomas Lake. Thomas, of Fort Worth, heads Texas Electric Service Co. and backed the river project as a potential local water supply. Directors met in Odessa before a banquet marking the district’s first water delivery to Odessa. A pump-station contract on the Odessa line near Midland was also awarded. Snyder directors R. A. Schooling Lyle Deffebach and W. J. Ely attended.
A Monahans couple on their honeymoon were injured in a two vehicle crash 10 miles northwest of Snyder at Dermott yesterday afternoon. James Rosson 22 suffered a dislocated shoulder and cuts to his left hand and his wife Vowell 20 sustained head lacerations. Both were listed in good condition at Battenfield Hospital.
Texas campaigns press ahead two weeks before the July 26 primary with Eisenhower as the central issue. Maston Nixon mobilizes Texas editors for an Eisenhower victory. the Corpus Christi Caller-Times endorses a Republican in a first ever. Loyal Democrats pledge to back Ike forces and challenge Shivers at the Chicago convention. Governor contenders trade barbs as Price Daniel predicts a record Texas turnout.
Water will be off this morning along Avenue S between Seventeenth and Twenty fourth Streets from 8 o clock until about noon. Acting city superintendent Ralph Eades says workers will be changing a valve at Avenue S and Twenty fourth Street. Outlets along Avenues R and T in the same area may also be affected.
Houston officials asked U S Rep Albert Thomas to seek a congressional investigation into a triple murder and a suicide at Memorial Hospital involving Ellington Air Force Base officer Capt Renard Haywood. Haywood killed nurse Carroll er and guards Jesse Fair and Robert Peterson before taking his own life. Officials cited prior warnings and questioned Ellington policing.
Polio headed for epidemic proportions in San Antonio with 74th case reported as officials project the 86 case threshold in about three weeks. In Houston eight new cases were logged while a serum test moves toward final day and 31,446 Harris County children have begun inoculations.
General Eisenhower convened with Republican leaders and the GOP National Committee as delegates left Chicago after nominating him. Arthur Summerfield was elected National Committee chairman and urged a united campaign to defeat the Democrats. Nixon joined morning talks and Eisenhower prepared to campaign across Senate and House races.
