Deaths: Tom Willis 55 of Scurry County
Tom Willis 55 of Scurry County died today at Cogdell Memorial Hospital. Funeral services are set for Friday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with Masonic rites and a second service Sunday at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Carthage. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery. Willis, born June 30 1918 in Carthage, had lived in Scurry County 16 years. Survived by Bertha Mae Sweet, three daughters, three sons, his father, three sisters, one brother, and seven grandchildren.

The state of Florida took custody of part of the Nuestra Senora de Atocha and La Margarita treasure, flown from Key West to the Leon County archives in Tallahassee. Guarded by police, the 500 pounds of gold and silver includes 1,172 pieces of eight, bars, instruments, and rosary beads, with 25 percent slated for the state after value assessment.
