The SDN Column contrasts old films with modern times noting trains steam power telephones and retro fashion. City Manager George Patterson says crews will soon overlay brick streets around the square with pre mixed asphalt accelerating downtown improvements and finishing the year long project.
On July 10 various past events are recalled including Telstar’s first Trans Atlantic TV relay in 1962, Calvin’s birth in 1509, Fillmore becoming president in 1850, Wyoming statehood in 1890, Wilson urging Versailles in 1919, lend lease with Greece in 1942, Beria purged in 1953, Tito and Nasser nuclear talk in 1960, and rail unions rejecting Kennedy proposals five years ago.
Snyder forecasts show a max 89 in Tuesday and 88 to 95 for Thursday across Northwest Southwest and South Central Texas. Partly cloudy conditions persist with scattered showers mainly in west south and south portions and mild to warm nights with lows 60 to 78 and highs 85 to 96.
In Paris the Red envoy Xuan Thuy accused the United States of spreading rumors of progress as peace talks stalled in the 12th session. He pressed for an immediate halt to all U.S. attacks on North Vietnam and called for quicker moves toward settlement.
Secretary of State Rusk urged rapid Senate ratification to curb nuclear proliferation as the Foreign Relations Committee opened hearings. He and disarmament chief Foster led the administration’s push, while Senate leader Mansfield signaled a cautious pace before adjournment.
Dr. Benjamin Spock and three codefendants received two year prison sentences for conspiracy to aid and counsel young men to evade the draft. Each was fined varying amounts while stays of execution were granted pending appeals. Coffin, Ferber, and Goodman faced fines of up to five thousand dollars alongside their prison terms.
Paris AP report says Prime Minister Georges Pompidou resigned with his government in a cabinet reshuffle ordered by President Charles de Gaulle. Pompidou, 47, presented his resignation at the Elysee Palace and Maurice Couve de Murville, the finance minister, was expected to take over.
About 200 guerrillas moving toward Saigon met two government companies five miles west of the city in darkness. Casualties were reported on the government side as the VC pulled back. Allied forces said 37 guerrillas were killed in nearby skirmishes. US Navy boats and helicopters destroyed three sampans loaded with rocket launchers bound for Saigon.
Washington AP reports the Pentagon has stopped development of the Navy F111B fighter. Congressional committees eliminated requested funds to continue work on the F111B, a version of the TFX warplane championed by former Defense Secretary McNamara for multi service use.
The Chamber of Commerce selects Kar C Manhorter, the city’s community development director, to lead the chamber office. He will also work as an industrial consultant to the city on a fee basis while the chamber shifts to greater industrial development efforts. Mayor McCormick notes ongoing city interest in industrial growth and a potential full-time role in the future.
Snyder School trustees approved routine personnel moves including resignations of Bob O Day and Mrs O Day and Donald Gressett. New hires include Mrs Sidney Johnson Mrs Jessie Lou Guthrie and Bernard B Weems. Reassignments shift Don Eiring to the high school band, and changes at Stanfield West and Northeast Elementary. Plans for a 1968-69 elementary science program were outlined with kits and a region IV guide. Glenn Hoyle children approved as pupils pending county transfer action.
A Clyde Beatty Cole Brothers Circus performance in Auburn New York collapsed during a violent storm. About 85 of roughly 300 spectators were injured though none critically. Hospitals reported two dozen admitted with others treated on site. Eyewitnesses described poles loosening and water rushing overhead before the tent fell.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Bolger Funeral Home for Mrs. Bessie Lavada Larimer 74 of 700 Avenues who died this morning at Snyder Hospital. She had lived in Snyder 13 years. Survivors include her husband George R. Larimer Snyder a daughter Mrs. Bill Chauncey Snyder a son Marvin E. Hubbard Snyder a sister Mrs. Ada Gentzel Ennis and a brother Jim Prater Muleshoe.
