The UIL votes new limits on awards affecting junior and senior high sports. Athletes may receive only one major award not exceeding 20 dollars during four high school years, with symbolic awards up to three dollars for each item. Jackets now capped at 20 dollars. Gifts to coaches restricted to 200 dollars.

Temperatures in Snyder reach a high of 83 with a 65 degree low noted at 7 am. Northwest Texas reports partly cloudy conditions with possible thundershowers tonight and Saturday and lows from 60 to 68. Southwest Texas sees cloudy skies in the south and west with showers and thundershowers, lows 64 to 72 and Saturday highs from 82 to 94.
Thousands gathered at Towle Memorial Park in Snyder for a daylong July 4 event with a parade, art show, swimming, tennis, baseball, and a fireworks finale. Dr. C L Kay of Lubbock Christian College urged renewed national responsibility and a return to faith, courage, and integrity amid alleged rising crime and vulgarly declining values. Over 10 000 attended the park festivities despite cool weather and a cancelled Webb Air Force Base jet flyover.
In Lake Wales Florida seven children and a man died when a 12 foot outboard flipped during a holiday boat ride on Lake Easy. An 11 year old girl survived clinging to the overturned craft as deputies recovered bodies after a three hour search.
Clouds and showers kept Texas cool as holiday outings continued. Rain from El Paso to Browns ville and along the Rio Grande mostly light with heavier totals in Dalhart and coastal areas. Fog formed near Alice and Cotulla with partly to mostly cloudy skies across the gentler midsection and south.
Hood County Sheriff reports a badly decomposed body found seven miles west of Granbury on a ranch. Described as almost skeletal, the person likely died about 90 days ago. No missing person reports match the remains, and the skull shows a hole between the eyes. Four people on a July 4 outing discovered the body.
In the South panhandle and DMZ area U S B52 bombers faced two anti aircraft missiles with none hitting. The raid campaign began Monday following large caches of Russian rockets found near Saigon as Marines battle near Khe Sanh and Gio Linh. Four Marines killed in action and 13 wounded. Three crewmen among four aboard a helicopter were killed. Security boosted in Saigon with no major Fourth of July festivities outside the embassy.
Sydney AP report says three day siege ends when gunman Wally Mellish 23, with hostage wife 18 and infant, is armed with a high powered rifle supplied by police commissioner Norman T Allan after he threatened to harm his wife and child. Allan entered the house with Rev. Clyde Paton to negotiate.
Allan Mellish seized his intended bride at gunpoint on Tuesday and forced marriage with Miss Muddle after which the ceremony was performed Wednesday by Rev. Paton. Mellish, armed with an Armalite rifle and 200 rounds, also possesses a shotgun, a .303 rifle, a pistol and grenades. Police surround the house as Mellish refuses offers to surrender and warns of potential harm to the bride and her baby.
A prisoner aboard a 71 passenger Trans World Airlines flight from Leavenworth to San Francisco briefly slipped from guards and threatened to hijack the aircraft. He claimed dynamite in a bag and guns with two accomplices, directing a course to Hermosillo. The pilot followed authority, circling Nevada for 20 minutes before the suspect was subdued and the plane landed. He was jailed in Las Vegas pending federal charges.
President Lyndon B. Johnson drew 54,234 visitors to HemisFair Independence Day events in San Antonio. Ambassador Ed Clark hosted a reception for about 40 ambassadors, as Johnson toured the U.S. Pavilion and the Institute of Texas Cultures. Governor Connally praised the visit, noting Johnson’s enjoyment despite security limits.
Moscow reports Cosmos 230 satellite launched and Sputnik functioning normally. Tass says the device is sending information to a Soviet research center for evaluation.
