President Johnson wheeled into San Antonio to greet about 40 ambassadors and their wives for Independence Day celebrations at HemisFair. A 50 gun salute capped a day of formal events with Gov. Connally hosting a dinner at his Floresville ranch ahead of a San Salvador trip.
Americans from coast to coast observed the 192nd anniversary of the Declaration with fireworks parades pageants and concerts. President Johnson and Vice President Humphrey spoke at major ceremonies in San Antonio Philadelphia and Washington, while Civil War re-enactments and colonial salutes marked the day amid fair weather and notable traffic.
AP dispatch reports U S negotiators press Hanoi to commit to removing its troops from South Vietnam and to accept a U S pledge to withdraw forces after a peace accord. Harriman cites Manila pledge and urges reciprocity while the bombing halt remains stalled.
