Johnson Orders Broad Study of Draft System
President Johnson ordered a six month study of the military draft to improve fairness and effectiveness. He named a 20 member National Advisory Commission to review the Selective Service System and consider national service by both men and women. The commission will study classifications, selection methods, administration, deferments, and exemptions, with possible revisions next year.
