Vice President Walter Mondale began his goodwill trip to Israel by visiting former Prime Minister Golda Meir at her Tel Aviv home. He discussed Israeli public opinion on stalled Middle East peace talks during the hour long meeting.
The SDN visits San Antonio Express columnist Roddy Stinson noting his Mars hoax claims and the recent Abilene liquor election chatter. Stinson, surprised to be real and not fictional, discusses his West Texas-focused work and proclaims he is “always right.”
Gov Dolph Briscoe Lt Gov Bill Hobby and Speaker Bill Clayton plan a 30 day special session starting July 10 to explore tax relief measures. They will meet with staffs after July 4 and may delay announcing topics. Briscoe repeats veto of any tax bill without two thirds in each house.
The Snyder Daily News will be closed Tuesday for Independence Day with no paper July 4. Briscoe announced the holiday policy at a news conference as Texas senators filed tax relief measures hoping for later consideration. Governor calls for special session to aid taxpayers.
Snyder hosts a July 4 celebration with a 2 p.m fiddlers contest and a 7:30 p.m patriotic concert at Towle Memorial Park, followed by an 8:30 p.m tractor pull at Scurry County Rodeo Grounds. Lyndel Vaught to sing patriotic music. Arts and Crafts show and tennis continue. Many offices close Tuesday July 4 and no newspaper will publish.
A detailed three day lineup lists July Fourth activities from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. including a carnival opening, tennis tournament, arts and crafts, fiddlers contest, patriotic concert by Lyndel Vaught, and a rodeo tractor pull at the grounds. Monday adds evening carnival hours, micro mini and regular tractor pulls, and a rock concert, with Tuesday featuring flag raising, a full day arts and crafts show, fishing rodeo, a drawing, and First Baptist Church singing followed by fireworks.
Snyder hosts the American Junior Rodeo Association National Finals Rodeo for the third year in a row at the Scurry County Coliseum August 8 to 12 with 8 p.m. performances daily. Sponsored by the Snyder Chamber of Commerce and Scurry County Board of Development, the event crowns junior champions as competitors earn points toward the Junior World Champion title. Burrell Markum, Valley Rodeo Company, Valley Mills, supplies stock. Rick Chatman of Snyder is the clown. announcers include Jim Miller of Rapid City, SD, and Marv Pierce of Sweetwater. Cheryl Kiner and her Texas Fiddle Band will perform.
A Snyder family continues rabies exposure treatment as a local veterinarian warns of a rising number of rabid animals in the area though cases remain isolated.
Partly cloudy Snyder forecast shows a 92 degree high Friday and 68 low with 7 am reading at 70. West Texas expects high 90s to over 100 in Big Bend valleys with lows near 70. A confirmed rabies case in a 32 month old Border Collie near Audry Head's rural home exposed four people who are being treated.
A resident reports a busted sewer line at 1302 28th Street causing insects and odor. City Manager George Patterson says the problem involves a private service line, not city responsibility, though a public crew unclogged it as a temporary fix and advised calling a plumber for permanent repair.
In Snyder, Columbia visitors Becky Obregon and her husband Greg discuss life in Colombia. They describe high car prices offset by cheap gas and a slower lifestyle. Becky, a 1963 Snyder High School graduate, studied at Texas Tech and met Greg there. They plan to stay in Snyder for a month while Greg prepares to start a Panama Bankers Trust Co. job in July. Also: Western Texas College announces a Residential Construction program costing 345 dollars for one year.
