The father of 14 year old Jerry Maxey identified the hanged boy found in a northwest Atlanta wooded area as his son. Police say the death occurred about noon and are awaiting confirmation of the victim’s identity while the urban renewal area is being cleared.
The Senate confirmed Wilson Cowen of Bethesda Maryland for the position of chief judge of the U.S. Court of Claims. Cowen previously served as chief commissioner of the court and is a former Amarillo Texas resident.
President Makarious rejects an American adviser to mediate Cyprus talks and warns the move could broaden the dispute beyond the United Nations. He will not attend the London Commonwealth conference and accuses Britain of backing the 1960 Cyprus accords.
President Johnson hailed the 3.3 billion dollar foreign aid bill as a victory for American policy. The House approved the measure 231 to 174 after Rep. Passman failed in a last bid to cut more funds. The bill sets a spending ceiling and moves to the Senate for authorization action.
The Rev. William McFerrin Stowe of Oklahoma City was named bishop of the Methodist Church for the Kansas area with headquarters in Topeka. The South Central Jurisdictional Conference set four year assignments, with Stowe succeeding Bishop Eugene Slater and replacing Bishop Paul Galloway.
The Polaris submarine Henry Clay ran aground on a shoal about 700 yards offshore near Newport News Virginia but was undamaged. Cmdr. Thomas A. Bryce of Wichita Falls Texas announced there was no damage after two tugs refloated the vessel in 20 minutes and it proceeded to Norfolk Naval Base on schedule.
Dr. Milton S. Eisenhower, Johns Hopkins president and brother of a former president, won a seat on Maryland's Republican National Convention delegation amid caucus maneuvering. He is a pledged Scranton backer and has not been asked to nominate Pennsylvanian Gov. William Scranton. Delegation changes came as Goldwater backers initially resisted but did not block the shift.
Gov. John Connally asked Texas lawyers for advice on redistricting education improvements and judicial boundary redraws. He spoke at the State Bar of Texas 82nd annual convention urging legislators to address apportionment and court workload, warning of political self interest.
The National Labor Relations Board ruled the Independent Metal Workers Union guilty of racial discrimination at Hughes Tool Co. in Houston, revoking its certification. The decision marks a first of its kind, holding a union accountable when it practices discrimination against members based on race.
The ruling declares grounds of illegal coercion unanimous with two dissenters. The majority says the union refused to process Ivory Davis's grievance due to race and thus refused to bargain with the employer. Revoking the union’s certification allows another union to seek certification at the plant.
Towle Memorial Park hosts a big July 4 program with a diving exhibition featuring eight divers at 4 p.m. and swimming races. New firework displays titled Casey Jones and Hot Rod Race join aerial acts as Miss Towle Pool contest is canceled.
Weather outlook across North Central to Southwest Texas. Temperatures steady with highs from 90s to 100s and lows in 60s to 80s. Widely scattered showers possible mainly at night, with small craft winds along the coast and isolated afternoon thundershowers in some areas.
SHREVEPORT AP Bobby Tamplin 20 of Marshall Texas died in a Shreveport hospital two hours after his car rolled twice near Greenwood Louisiana on US 80. Patrolmen said a companion William Miller also of Marshall was in fair condition at a Greenwood hospital.
Fidel Castro in Havana commented on his sister Juanita's defection blaming U S influence for her statements and likening the moment to the U S Civil War. He cited Abraham Lincoln's divided families and slavery while calling his revolution a personal trial and noting Cuba is an enormous prison.
London AP reports a 7185 ton freighter Heinrich Heine loaded the first of 950 buses Britain ships to Cuba amid U S anti embargo pressure. More Communist ships will carry the remaining buses as Britain defends the sale as non strategic trade.
AP reports a 17 year old newlywed, Mrs. Richard Walton, drowned Wednesday at Hamlin West Lake shortly after three weeks of marriage. The tragedy occurred at the lake in Hamlin.
Communist guerrillas ambushed a Vietnamese army supply convoy on a mountain highway near Kontum Province killing 29 government troops and wounding 24. US helicopters intervened as Viet Cong looted shells and weapons before retreating into the jungle. A separate blast in Saigon injured two American servicemen and a Chinese passenger.
