The temperature reached 106 for a second straight day with a sixth consecutive 100-plus reading and a ninth hot day this June. forecaster predicted clear to partly cloudy hot conditions across Texas with a few sprinkles near Amarillo. Sunday highs up to 113 at Presidio, no rain reported.
The Army resumes limited reserve enlistments for six month training in a six month period ending December. It will take 6 300 men aged 17 to 18 years and 2 600 aged 18 to 26, with 3 000 deferments for high school completion. About 2 000 new recruits monthly will be allocated by area quotas.
A clear to partly cloudy forecast in West Texas through Tuesday with hot conditions. Saturday and Sunday highs reach 106 with overnight lows around 73, and a 7:30 a.m. reading today was 74. Widely scattered afternoon and evening thundershowers are possible.
Mrs. Clifford White, presumed dead after her husband’s death and car bog in Big Bend National Park, was found alive by a Border Patrol plane near a mountain cave. She survived six days, signaling for help with a white blouse as ground teams and food drops were organized for extraction.
A special grand jury met to investigate the death of Jack Kiser a 26 year old Colorado City service station worker. He died after a scuffle at the police station Saturday night after being booked following a cafe disturbance. A Colorado City policeman was placed in technical custody.
EL CENTRO California scientists from the University of California report that cattle cooled by fans gain 32 percent more weight than a control group kept under identical conditions. They plan to test optimal fan operation duration to maximize relief this summer.
The Snyder Chamber of Commerce board to meet at 7 o'clock in the chamber office. Dr. Wilton Jones says the routine agenda includes discussion of the Scurry County Industrial Foundation chartering and plans for its first stockholder meeting in September.
Four weekend climbers were rescued early today after being stranded overnight on a 45 degree ice fall high on Mt Adams. The group included David Bishop 29 Toppenish Wash Mike McGuire 20 Yakima student at Colorado School of Mines and two Yakima residents Dr Ralph Uber 40 and Robert Swenson 33. They were found at the 9500 foot level and taken to Yakima for observation in good condition.
Hill County Sheriff Ernest Brooks says Wilford Davis and Bobby Hodges, both 16, were among eight inmates who fled Gatesville state boys home. Davis, who fired on motorists, was recaptured after a panel truck overturned. Hodges was later caught at a farmhouse. Six others remained at large.
Mrs. Frank Bustamente was charged with murder over the death of her nine month old twin daughter. Hospital officials said the infant suffered a fractured skull and internal injuries and died Saturday night after being rushed to the hospital. Police said the mother claimed the girl fell from bed.
The Alfred Weathers home at 3101 Avenue K was evacuated when a bull snake invaded the kitchen. Kenneth Roach 13 and Mokey Hale 14 saved the day by killing the 42 foot reptile with a hoe after it coiled around a broom.
Japanese Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi returns from Washington and states the United States is ready to pull its ground forces from Japan immediately and expects withdrawal by year end.
Workmen uncover more bodies in debris as Cameron surveys raise unofficial death toll to about 450. Sheriff Reid reports 246 bodies on hand with many more arriving. Gov Long predicts counts will exceed 400 as mass burials begin and disease risk grows in a flood damaged region.
The board set 82 dollars per student for the 1957 58 year under the minimum foundation program. They estimated 1 172 million dollars available, with 7 million for the free textbook program and 165 282 875 dollars for per capita funds. Textbooks will reach 1 997 500 pupils, up 73 650. New accreditation requires 16 units plus physical education and four years each of English math and physical sciences. Debate over impact on sparsely settled areas and teacher counts.
Slaton resident Harvey J. Hawkins a Santa Fe brakeman fell from a boxcar at the Brach switch near the Sunray loading racks north of here. He sustained mostly bruises and was treated at Battenfield Jones Hospital.
The House Foreign Affairs Committee voted 17 to 10 to authorize a three year loan fund for economic development in foreign countries. The panel approved 500 million dollars annually for 1959 and 1960, less than President Eisenhower sought, but retained 500 million for the coming year and backed a three year two billion dollar authority. A spokesman said aid to Yugoslavia was also approved.
The George Parr mail fraud trial resumes in Houston with testimony continuing only until Wednesday due to July 4. Defense counsel Percy Foreman says the defense will close its case tomorrow, followed by closing arguments. Parr and eight South Texas associates plus two former banks are accused of mail fraud involving over $200,000 in Benavides School District funds.
In Los Angeles a group of 37 Houston area students and chaperones depart on a 21 day goodwill tour of ten Western states. Emma Bolling counselor and 37 Spring Branch Junior High pupils say Texans are not much different from others and aim to show that by visiting Californians.
More than 100 Snyder soldiers returned from the National Guard encampment at North Fort Hood. Lt Billy Joe Brown led a top reconnaissance platoon and Lt Johnny Greenfield earned the Weston Trophy for the rifle team.
