A massive cold wave grips much of the United States with subzero temps in at least 27 states. Snow and flooding add misery from the Midwest to the Northeast, with deaths in Missouri and widespread power outages across the region.
Secretary of Labor W Willard Wirtz says he expects the Maine to Texas dock strike to be settled, signaling likely resolution of a nationwide labor clash. He spoke amid talks and urged patience while negotiators work out terms acceptable to both sides.
Paul Amos Sandblom, 40, was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for fraud, having taken about 31 million from hundreds of investors across the Southwest. Dist. Judge Reynaldo Garza ordered three five-year terms to run consecutively after Sandblom pleaded no contest and has been jailed since Jan. 11. A state grand jury has indicated possible trial next month in San Antonio. He reportedly used mail fraud and a deceptive lending scheme to promise high returns from investments tied to highway contractors and other ventures.
Gov John Connally pushes a major bill to create a powerful coordinating board for public colleges and universities in Texas. The measure heads to the House with priority status as lawmakers consider restructuring state programs for mental health and a pay raise plan for teachers. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara was admitted to Walter Reed Army Hospital with an upper respiratory infection after a two day cold and a fever of 102 degrees. Assistant Secretary Arthur Sylvester said the illness prompted the hospital admission.
A dry norther from the Midwest sent cold air into Texas with subzero readings in places like Dalhart Amarillo and Lubbock while snow did not materialize as forecast. Temperatures south of the cold front held in the 50s along the coast and Rio Grande Valley with forecast expectations of additional frost and more frigid air later in the week.
Billie Sol Estes lawyers asked US District Judge Sarah Hughes to dismiss charges that the once prominent farm financier caused government losses. Estes, in handcuffs, was transported from El Paso to Dallas for court, where two counts accuse sworn statements to the Commodity Credit Corp. He faced related lies about liabilities in 1961 and 1960 while doing business as United Elevators in Plainview Texas.
Scurry County reports 3750 qualified voters for next year at noon today. Of these, 1000 have exemptions and 2.7 persons have purchased poll taxes. The tax office stays open until 5 p.m. Saturday for last-minute poll-tax buyers, with a note to arrive early to avoid long lines as the deadline approaches.
U S Ambassador Maxwell D Taylor met Lt General Nguyen Khanh in Saigon for the first time since Khanh seized power in the latest coup. Relations were described as normal as Taylor also visited acting premier Nguyen Xuan Oanh amid streets roiled by protests. A firing squad later executed a 20 year old in Saigon's main market as authorities warned against further Communist violence.
Mixed OCR weather brief shows highs around 66 degrees in Snyder area with lows near 2 degrees, windy today. Northeast Texas fair tonight and Saturday with warmer tonight and colder Saturday, winds variable to south, coastal areas mostly south winds 6 to 18.
Washington AP reports Senate approval of a constitutional amendment aimed at presidential disability and succession with a 65 to 0 vote. Johnson urges action, House delay leaves main provisions uncompleted as hearings are planned, the measure would allow presidential appointment if electors vote for another candidate and ensure the vice presidency is filled by the candidate receiving the greatest electoral votes if the president cannot discharge duties.
