Scientists Set Site For Deep Hole
Washington AP The National Science Foundation tentatively selects an ocean area near Hawaii for the Project Mohole drill aiming to bore a six mile deep hole into the earth from the ocean bottom. Drilling could start in 1968 with earlier shallow tests in 1967 at six Pacific sites. Major hole project may take three years and cost about 70 million dollars in the first three years plus 3 million annually thereafter. The Hawaii site lies about 100 miles north northeast of Maui.
