Former President Lyndon B. Johnson was buried at a ranch cemetery near the Pedernales River after a 50 minute ceremony in near freezing weather. Evangelist Billy Graham and Gov. John Connally delivered eulogies as thousands gathered to honor Johnson. The funeral followed services in Washington and reflected Johnsons ties to Texas hill country and military pageantry.
President Nixon will give a 11 minute nationwide radio address Sunday evening about his fiscal 1974 budget and its impact on the economy. The taped address will air at 6 p.m. EST, White House press secretary Ron Ziegler said.
President Nixon asked Congress to dissolve the Office of Emergency Preparedness the Office of Science and Technology and the National Space Council saving about 389 executive office jobs and 2 million dollars. Functions would shift to HUD NSF and other departments while the Space Council would be terminated.
Senate leader Mike Mansfield outlined the Nixon administration budget of 268.7 billion dollars for the upcoming fiscal year with a 12 billion dollar deficit. He noted 202 billion in uncontrollable outlays and about 66 billion controllable by the president and Congress. He cited a Pentagon rise to about 79 billion and said welfare medical research and education aid would exceed defense spending.
Vice President Spiro T. Agnew will depart Sunday for a week plus trip to South Vietnam and six other Asian nations including Laos Cambodia Thailand Malaysia Singapore and Indonesia. The visit aims to discuss postwar relations and the U S role in Asia and to press for peace and self determination. He will be joined by National Security Council aides and staff.
Defense Secretary Melvin Laird announced that operations to bring home more than 100 American prisoners from Hanoi will start next week. Flights will go nonstop from Hanoi to Clark Air Base in the Philippines via a route over Vientiane, which will not land there. Names of POWs will be provided to Paris officials, with next of kin to be notified before any public release.
Snyder High School’s Oklahoma drew about 800 fans for its opening night, with strong ensemble singing and notable performances by Jan Bellamy as Aunt Eller, Sharon Floyd as Laurey, Donnie Burk as Curly, and others. Remaining shows are tonight at 8 and Saturday at 8 in the SHS Auditorium.
