A 25 pound terrorist bomb placed against a US Signal Corps billet in Saigon killed a U S sergeant asleep and fatally injured a Vietnamese woman as a lunar New Year truce neared its midpoint. Two soldiers and several civilians were wounded in the blast near Tan Son Nhut airport.
Pickets were withdrawn and negotiators extended the deadline after a last minute settlement at General Dynamics Fort Worth plant. Local 776 and management announced a 60 month labor pact possible, with ratification planned at 2 p.m. The deal covers about 6,000 workers and centers on seniority job protection benefits and subcontracting decisions.
Snow and ice packed rails blamed for derailment of a Santa Fe mail train at the Amarillo depot. The diesel engine section with three units jumped tracks shortly after 5 am. No injuries reported.
