A Santa Fe two car diesel passenger train derailed near Los Angeles after speeding on a curve, killing an estimated 29 and wounding at least 90. Debris and mangled bodies hampered identification while survivors and families searched the wreckage and authorities investigated alleged excess speed.
WILLIAMSON W Va Jan 23 The engine and four cars of a Norfolk and Western west bound passenger train derailed on a curve near the West Virginia Kentucky line killing the engineer Walt Willard of Bluefield and injuring about 20 others. The Pocahontas train plunged over a 40 foot embankment and the engine and tender overturned. Fireman Ernest Hoback 27 of Bluefield was among nine injured admitted to Williamson Memorial Hospital. About 12 more received emergency treatment and were released. Officials said preliminary evidence did not point to excessive speed. The train carried five sleepers three coaches two mail cars and an express car. A photographer saw a car perched on the edge of the embankment.
Poll tax receipts total 2,930 and exemption certificates 715, reaching 3,645 qualified voters. Tax assessor Jim Ikard announced extended hours through the deadline, January 31, with noon-hour openings and Saturday afternoon service to assist workers.
Providence station WPRO-TV filmed a major fire in the City Hall Hardware Co annex by pointing a camera from its fifth floor studio window four blocks away. The footage showed the blaze as firefighters battled the flames.
Montgomery enters its eighth week of bus boycott with no clear settlement. Reverend Martin Luther King Jr says the protesters were not represented at a City Commission meeting that produced the compromise. The plan proposes seating divisions with reserved white and Black sections and rush hour buses for Negro riders, while boycott leaders want a first come first served policy. The Snyder Optimist Club will present the Most Valuable Player trophy to Tiger Shorty Grimmett at the weekly luncheon Tuesday at the Hilander. Grimmett, 1955 Tiger football MVP and District 1-AAA champions, will receive the trophy donated by Optimist Carl Herod and presented tomorrow.

Four of the five men killed when a bridge on State Highway 159 collapsed into the Brazos River have been recovered. John Hoff Jr., 26, of Bellville, was found yesterday under the crane boom. W. O. Lethman, 40, of Hempstead, remains missing. Hoff’s body was located by diver Jimmy Jones in 12 feet of water. Other recovered victims include Walter P. Duncan, 48, from Ennis, and W. D. Boyd, 32, of Buffalo, and William G. Bethea, 24, of Dallas, with two bodies found earlier.
In Marion Ohio three young men Willard Ciola Duane Packer and Donald Kimberling were arrested after a five hour dawn bank robbery and hostage crisis. They held bank employee Ralph Hurr his wife Alma and her mother Carolyn Sulser at gunpoint recovering loot estimated between 10000 and 50000. Police cooperated with a stakeout catching Ciola and Packer at the bank while Kimberling was arrested at the Hurr home. The trio face bank robbery and kidnapping charges.
Rabat Morocco Thami el Glaoui longtime Berber chieftain and Pasha of Marrakech died at 78 after stomach cancer surgery. He led Atlas tribes before aging grip loosened amid nationalist opposition and French-backed traditionalists. Rioting erupted in Marrakech last July as protesters opposed his pro French stance and he fired at the crowd before police intervened.
Patrolman Edward Graf, 27, was beaten with his service revolver during a struggle with a former convict he was arresting. Graf sustained injuries requiring thirty two stitches and believes he could have been killed, noting he is a father of three. The suspect fled, was later arrested, and the weapon recovered.
In Rangoon Burma a top rebel commander surrendered with 90 followers during a government amnesty offered last October.

An 18 year old high school senior, Don ald Stevens, was beaten by a gang of youths with a jack handle near his home after dropping off a companion from a bowling night. Stevens received sixteen stitches and was listed in fair condition. Four youths were in custody James Walsh Eugene Siemeck Anthony de Grado and Jack Grabowski with two more sought. A neighbor armed with a sledge hammer interrupted the attack and provided license details leading to arrests.
AUSTIN The State Pardons Board denied a request to commute the sentence of Johnnie Elwood Gordon, who is scheduled to die early tomorrow at Huntsville State Prison after a Harris County rape conviction. The denial clears the path to execution as planned.
The Senate Investigations subcommittee faulted Harold E. Stassen for hindering its inquiry into a 1954 Pakistan grain bin project while he led the Foreign Operations Administration. It found evidence of collusion between Agricultural Construction Co. and project engineer Robert Pinner to steer the contract, and noted Stassen overrode subordinates and delayed documents that hampered the probe.
