The third cold wave in 12 days blankets Texas with winds up to 40 mph and dust then snow in Perryton, Dalhart, and the Panhandle. Forecasters warn of zero to near freezing temperatures by Thursday, with frost risk in the Lower Rio Grande Valley and sleet possible in the east.
Two car collision at Avenue O and Twenty fourth Street left James D Montgomery and James Ralph Hicks with head injuries. Montgomery hospitalized. Hicks admitted. Vehicle damages estimated at 600 and 400 dollars. Earlier patrols logged two more accidents near Snyder with one injuring none.
The United States Britain and the Soviet Union begin major talks in Washington aiming for a nuclear test ban. Washington seeks 8 to 10 inspections annually while Moscow favors 3 with France to join. Agreement hinges on on site inspections and verification.
The Veterans Administration aims to recover 155 722 dollars from the Houston Independent School District for alleged overpayments to veterans in classes from 1959 to 1961. VA regional director Edward Onstor said an audit disclosed the excess, and a VA committee ruled the district must repay. The district asked that the case be reviewed in Washington.

The chamber of commerce merchants committee held an organizational meeting Monday night at the chamber offices. Harold Bennett presided as last year’s chairman. Morris Sanders was elected chairman for the coming year with Jim Nixon, Bill Wood, Gene Thompson, Alvis Sellers, Bill Williams, Chuck Wolfe and Floyd Boston joining the executive committee. The group voted to continue last year’s programs and reinstate former businessman barbecues, plan a Christmas survey for next year, and discuss city decorations in Snyder. A follow up meeting is set for Friday at 7 30 p.m. to finalize the year’s work.
