Washington report outlines President Carter preparing to address Congress on energy as the top priority, with taxes and the Panama Canal treaty likely in focus. He is expected to urge breaking the energy stalemate and propose a $25 billion tax cut to offset last year's Social Security tax hike.
AP reports in Jerusalem Prime Minister Menahem Begin said it is up to Egypt to salvage stalled Mideast peace talks and he believes the United States will not pressure him. Secretary of State Cyrus Vance sought to restart negotiations, speaking with Begin by phone and planning an evening meeting in the American hotel suites.
Jerry Vestal plans a Jan 30 Eckerd Drug Store opening in Varsity Square while hiring continues. The SDN Column recalls Snyder High School’s famed 1963 64 basketball squad, disqualified after UIL ruled some players received jackets or tokens costing over the $15/$12 limits, despite a strong season.
In Scurry County voter records move from the tax assessor to the county clerk Beverly Ainsworth. New yellow registration cards may be delayed and residents should verify addresses, as unrecorded names risk purge from poll lists. If never registered, visit the clerk now to qualify to vote.
Snow sleet and freezing rain spread across Texas from the Panhandle to the Gulf Coast. She is a Snyder resident with deep local ties, a Western Texas College student studying law enforcement, and former secretary and clerk in the Scurry JP and Snyder Police departments. She seeks election to uphold Texas laws and continue efficient county service.
Farmers from across the nation protest low crop prices in Washington with 3,000 participants. Trucks clog traffic during a seven day lobbying parade near the Capitol as pickets seek meetings with lawmakers. Spokane comments call the campaign a public relations success for the movement.
