Public confidence in President Carter's ability to handle the economy has fallen with a New York Times CBS News poll of 1599 adults. Only 19 percent trust his inflation control, 26 percent back budget balance, and 46 percent see progress on unemployment. The overall job rating dropped from 66 percent approval at inauguration to 55 percent in October and 51 percent in the latest January poll.

Cy Miller announces a $6,000 gift from Edith McKannan to furnish one of eight suites in the new three story Cogdell Memorial Hospital wing in New York. Additional furnishings costs are $4,000 per room. funds reduce needed bonds for the addition. State bond issue earlier approved. hospital busier due to winter illnesses with over 20 admissions in one day. Edith McKanna, noted ranch and oil operator, chairs the Scurry County Historical Commission.
Cairo Egypt AP President Anwar Sadat orders Foreign Minister Mohammed Kamel home from Jerusalem talks alleging Israel pushing partial solutions that block a just peace. Sadat calls emergency session of parliament and cancels appointments for 10 days to monitor developments amid stalled negotiations.
Washington AP reports thousands of striking farmers rallied on the Capitol steps to protest low prices and press for face to face talks with President Carter and congressional leaders. The protests span seven days of rallies, tractor parades, and lobbying as Congress opens.
