Washington reports the unemployment rate fell from 6.9 to 6.4 percent in December, the lowest in over three years, with 480,000 people leaving jobless rolls and total unemployment at 6.3 million. Employment rose by 410,000 to 92.6 million, marking a 1977 gain of 4.1 million jobs.
In Austin AP reports three Howard County cotton farmers won a 246,292 dollar supreme court judgment affirming their right to exit a 1973 cotton contract during a year of high prices. The court found no reversible error in the Amarillo Court of Civil Appeals ruling.
The SDN column recalls a postwar ice spell in Snyder and offers driving tips for ice and snow. Freezing mist coated area roads with ice leading to multiple wrecks and Scurry County's first fatality of the year. Nora Knoll Maples 56 of San Antonio died when her late model station wagon crashed into a median crane on U.S. 84 east of Snyder. Her daughter Sandy 20 was injured and hospitalized. The pair had been returning from Lubbock after accompanying Sandy’s twin Debbie Maples to Texas Tech. Mrs Maples was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Bobby Goodwin. The body was taken to Bell-Seal Funeral Home.
Snyder School Trustees extended Supt Bill Hood's contract through June 1981 amid a revived three-agency tennis court proposal sent back to committee to trim plans and reduce costs. Bids totalled 279000, far above the initial 150000. The board approved Sullenger as sparklers aide, bought 10 junior high band uniforms, allowed one out-of-town 7th grade football game, and denied a transfer request from East to Northeast Elementary.

A seminar for farmers and consumers on the American Agriculture Movement is set for 7 30 p m Thursday at the Towl Park Barn. Snyder Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Committee sponsors the session to explain the movement and its goals. The farmers seek pricing parity to avoid profit loss and possible shutdowns. Guest speakers from Colorado will discuss the movement.
Retiring Congressman Omar Burleson told Snyder Lions Club that government overreach risks the free enterprise system as regulation expands. The Jones County native and 32 year representative warned bureaucrats gain power through action and inaction, while praising America’s free enterprise overall.
