The Flying Enterprise sank in the Atlantic after Captain Kurt Carlsen and mate Kenneth Dancy were rescued by the tug Turmoil. The two men were pulled from the icy sea in lifebelts as the freighter rolled and disappeared beneath towering waves amid a Christmas Day distress.

State fights brew as inspection stations still idle

Fire Spreads Through Four Buildings in Haskell Square
Fire fanned by slight winds spread rapidly through four buildings on the square in Haskell this morning. The Haskell Volunteer Fire Department fought the blaze for over an hour. Firemen say the blaze started from an explosion when a heating stove was lit in the offices of Cotton Broker Ralph Raney. Within an hour the Jones Dry Goods Store, an optometrist’s office, the Haskell American Red Cross, a photography studio, and a dress shop were in flames.

Wrecked Pennsylvania Abandoned by 45 Crewmen in Pacific
Forty five crew members aboard the Pennsylvania abandoned the crippled freighter as it took on water after a 14 foot crack. Four SOS messages, weathering mountainous seas, and rapid rescue efforts by seven ships and several aircraft followed as the ship drifted 465 miles northwest of Vancouver Island. Captain George P. Plover reported trouble earlier and the ship’s steering failed though briefly fixed before abandonment.
