The ordinance finalizes Snyder north south street renaming Avenue S to College Avenue with Sept 1 effectiveness. Officials report no objections but note a delay to allow business, directory, and supplier address changes before new directories are issued. WACIL McNAIR.
A special congressional commission urged a sweeping overhaul of federal criminal laws including total firearms registration and abolition of the death penalty even for treason and presidential assassination. The 336 page report also calls for a handgun ban and lenient marijuana rules, with harsher penalties for dangerous criminals.
British Ambassador Geoffrey Jackson has been abducted by the Tupamaros guerrillas in Montevideo. Aides were beaten and the ambassador and guards were seized from the British Embassy as a car with diplomatic markings was driven away. The group has held other foreigners, including U.S. expert Claude Fly and Brazilian consul Aloysio Dias Gomide, in a long campaign of political kidnappings.
On this date in 1815 U S forces under Gen Andrew Jackson defeated the British at New Orleans ending the War of 1812. Other noted events include Galileo's death in 1642 LaSalle reaching Niagara Falls in 1679 Wilson outlining 14 points in 1918 and de Gaulle becoming French president in 1959.
Snyder reports 7 am temperature 14 degrees with 34 high Thursday and 14 low. Northwest Texas fair and warmer with colder Panhandle Saturday night. North Central Texas sunny and warm then 50 to 56. Northeast Texas clear tonight 20 to 27 and 47 to 53 Saturday. Southwest and South Central Texas warmer with varied tonight lows and Saturday highs 56 to 66 and 52 to 62.
Governor Preston Smith was said to be in good condition and eager to leave St. Davids Hospital as indications pointed to discharge this afternoon. An aide noted the gastric ulcer flare up sidelined him briefly but he was expected to attend the legislature opening and the inauguration on January 19.
Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird arrives in Saigon with Admiral Moorer to plan further U.S. troop withdrawals from Vietnam. The agenda centers on disengagement, with orders to reduce total U.S. strength from 335,800 to 284,000 by May 1 and further to 250,000 or less in summer, including withdrawal of 12,500 Marines by May 1 and another 12,500 during the summer.
The Scurry County Industrial Foundation will hold its annual meeting for stockholders at 7 p.m. Monday in the Snyder Savings and Loan Association Community Room.
A U S appeals court scolds the Agriculture Department and orders a complete ban on the pesticide DDT. It directs the government to start cancellation proceedings with public hearings if manufacturers appeal, while not deciding an immediate suspension.
The Labor Department reports unemployment at six percent in December, the highest in nine years, despite GM strike returnees. 4.6 million unemployed, average weekly factory earnings up to $1.03, workweek 39.7 hours. White unemployment 5.5, Black 9.3. Long-term joblessness rises with 15-week jobless exceeding one million.
A bomb exploded in an alley beside the Soviet Embassy cultural building in Washington. There were no injuries, and authorities pledged increased police protection for Soviet facilities. A caller claimed the blast and linked it to demands to "Let our people go." Local police recovered fragments but could not identify the bomb type.
A three judge federal panel ruled Texas annual voter registration and the January 31 cutoff unconstitutional but declined to halt enforcement. The court retains jurisdiction to let the Legislature fix the system. The panel, including Houston judges, voided Article VI and Election Code provisions setting Oct 1 to Jan 31 registration.
