Democrats Back Bigger Panel to Pack Rules Committee

House Democrats voted to enlarge the Rules Committee to 15 members nine Democrats and five Republicans with eight liberal Democrats expected to control. Dies Given Top Honor In Senate

The Texas legislature opened with Sen. Martin Dies Jr named Senate president pro tempore after a closed caucus. He will preside until the lieutenant governor’s oath and is third in line for the governorship. A drawing was set for Thursday to assign four or two year Senate terms.

Brumley Rites Today for Mrs Floy Brumley at Union Baptist

Funeral services were held for Mrs Floy Brumley 75 at 3 p m at Union Baptist Church with Bro W J Chambers officiating. Burial followed at Snyder Cemetery with Bell Funeral Home directing. She died Monday at the home of her daughter Mrs L L Lewis in Snyder County survivors include two sons Leonard Brumley and Lee Brumley one sister Mrs George Brumley four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Pallbearers listed.

Edmondson Becomes Oklahoma's New Senator

Howard Edmondson left Edmondson To Capital for Washington after resigning as governor to take the Senate seat replacing the late Robert Kerr. He was appointed by George Nigh who moved from lieutenant governor. Edmondson, 37, refused to state positions on specific issues but pledged to support the President if in the country and Oklahoma's best interests. He favors continuing the 27.2 percent oil depletion allowance and says education can be financed at state and local levels.

Pleasant Weather Grips Texas Statewide

Pleasant brisk winter weather cooled Texas with clear skies statewide. A cool front cleared clouds across the state late Monday, with temperatures ranging from 26 degrees in El Paso and Lubbock to 67 in McAllen and 52 in El Paso later in the day.

Slayton Is Made Chief Astronaut At NASA

Washington AP reports NASA has named Air Force Maj. Donald K. Slayton chief astronaut after grounding him for heart trouble. He mentors nine new space pilots, assigns tasks to six other Mercury veterans, and oversees records and admin work. Slayton, grounded last July, holds a one year waiver through Nov. 20 with periodic evaluations.

Snyder City Council Sees Vacancy After Resignation

The Snyder City Council adjourned with one vacancy as Councilman Fred Davis resigned to live outside the city. Davis, elected to Place 5 in 1961, will serve until April. The meeting included a Texas DPS traffic inventory, praise for the city’s safety record, and actions on planning, finance, and public works.
