The Associated Press reports 7 more road deaths on the New Year weekend, raising total fatalities to 262. Rain added hazards but overall the toll fell below the Christmas peak of 720. The National Safety Council estimates 360 to 440 deaths may occur during the period ending Sunday midnight. Last year’s three day New Year toll was 474.
Texas began 1966 with warm humid air as a weak front moved east. Scattered showers kept roads damp and slightly hazardous for travelers returning from Christmas New Year holidays. Early highway death tolls averaged about 120 daily, with lows near 33 degrees in Dalhart and highs near 68 in Corpus Christi.
Midwest Oil Corp and Coastal States Gas Producing report test and drill several prospects across Nolan Scurry and Stonewall counties. Wells show oil gas and acid stimulation results with depths from about 3 470 to 11 400 feet and multiple drillsite locations near Snyder Aspermont Lamesa and Clairemont with varying outputs and test data.
The Snyder Chamber launches a membership drive with a 7 15 a.m. breakfast at the 66 Cafe. Derrell Parrish and Chamber Manager Jim Heath coordinate the effort to add 85 members and raise the annual budget by 5000 dollars to fund major work programs.
A major item is the elimination of intermittent special assessment events funded by merchants and chamber members for projects like Christmas decorations. The Chamber of Commerce aims to budget all such events in advance so no special assessments will be needed.
In New York City on the first day of the new year a subway and bus strike halted service citywide. The mayor and officials began a campaign to revamp the transit system with plans for a dynamic program and needed financing. few riders remained on streets as trains stopped at 5 am and yard crews prepared for the day. Prospectors and campaign volunteers prepared lists and canvassing schedules for mayoral outreach.
In Detroit a nine year old boy shot and killed his grandfather David Todd fifty, claiming the gun looked like a toy. Police said Mayo Todd was inside the home when the incident occurred and believed a strike would not affect local transit.
Bethlehem Steel Corp. announced price hikes on structural steel shapes and piling, signaling a new year dispute with government. President Johnson urged a meeting between company officials and his economic advisers, while Bethlehem spokesmen offered no comment on re election plans.
Allied units opened two New Year offensives against the Viet Cong north of Saigon while Viet Cong forces carried out heavy attacks in the Mekong Delta. Near Tuy Hoa Korean and Vietnamese troops killed 65 Viet Cong and captured four, as U.S. para drops pressed 35 miles northwest of Saigon where 125 enemies fell and 63 were captured. In Vinh Dinh Province a regional force suffered heavy casualties as a Viet Cong assault struck, with reinforcements rushed in. Air operations over North Vietnam were paused, and a 30 hour cease-fire began.
President Johnson's envoy Arthur J. Goldberg flies into Paris to meet Prime Minister Harold Wilson on Viet Nam. Another emissary, W Averell Harriman, met Yugoslav President Tito at Brdo Castle as part of ongoing diplomacy.
Eunice E. Weathersbee announces candidacy for re election in the Democratic Primary in May. She pledges continued hard work and gratitude for past support while acknowledging trust placed in her by Scurry County residents.

Sterling Taylor a Snyder businessman announces candidacy for re election to the office of County Judge in the May 7 Democratic primary. He vows to serve if honored with a second term, noting long residence since 1907 and a background in real estate insurance banking and farming.
Mrs Agnes Brown a county resident for 45 years and Snyder resident for 150 years announces bid in Democratic primary May 7 for re election as County Treasurer. She pledges continued efficient operation of the office and notes membership in the State Treasurers Association with three committee roles.
