From AP dispatches a somber note tempered celebrations as fears of world catastrophe dimmed temporarily. Despite a general revelry greeting the new year, many voices warned that global tensions kept nations in a fragile peace.
An opening election year report lists Democratic primary dates July 26 and August 23, with general election November 4. Prospective candidates must file by May 15. Included are contests for commissioner of precinct 4 and county offices such as clerk, treasurer, judge, and superintendent, with other posts up for election this year.
Little Rock attorneys were ordered to study the Dallas court ruling against immediate school integration to gauge its impact on Little Rock. The board offered no clear plan after the analysis. Gov. Faubus urged appealing the ruling, while federal troops and the National Guard had previously patrolled Central High.
Mrs Eunice Weathersbee announces her bid for re election to district court clerk. She began duties in 1941 and has been elected each term since. Widow of E E Weathersbee who managed Bryant Link Co until his 1939 death, she has two children Mary Belle True of Midland and Claude Weathersbee of Floydad. She attends First Baptist Church.
J. C. Massingill, 3111 Avenue A in Scurry County, announces his bid for commissioner of county precinct 4. A long-time resident, he has served as sheriff's office chief deputy and plans to resign in about three months. Born February 25, 1914 in Hamilton County, his career spans trucking, farming, a service station, and ASC committee work.
W C Davidson 71 announces candidacy for justice of the peace in precinct 1. He has served as peace justice since Feb 1 1947 and has been elected four times. Born Jan 6 1886 in Erath County he has lived in Scurry County since 1901. Married with four children, he resides at 1012 Twenty sixth Street. He is father to W M Davidson and James Davidson. A former Camp Springs farmer, he is a Methodist and a Mason.
Mrs. Mollie Pinkerton announces her reelection bid for county treasurer. A Scurry County lifetime resident since 1939, she resides at 707 Twenty-eighth Street and is a widow whose husband Ewell Pinkerton died in 1928. She has three children: Frank and Eugene Pinkerton of Snyder and Dorothy Woodard of Haskell, and she is active in local civic clubs.
Dan Cotton, the county clerk, declares re-election bid after completing his first term. He aims to continue overseeing local records, elections, and administrative duties.
Parmer, 44, announces candidacy for re election as commissioner of the precinct since 1950. He was appointed to complete Henry Ellerd’s term after his death and has twice been re elected. A native of Scurry County, he resides five miles southeast of Snyder on the Sweetwater highway with wife and two daughters. He formerly operated a maintainer on his precinct and worked building roads and terraces for a dirt contractor. He is Baptist.
Ronald A. Riley, 20, of Brooklyn New York, serving on the Tidewater, was seriously injured by a fireworks explosion in the basement of his sister Dorothy Rocco’s Naples apartment. He was taken to the American Navy hospital. his leg was reportedly nearly torn off. The blast occurred at Mrs. Rocco’s home, wife of Italian-American Joseph Rocco.
Nationwide counts show 47 holiday auto deaths after 15 hours, about 60 percent of the Christmas toll. The National Safety Council expressed optimism that the final toll of the 30-hour period might not reach the 130 projected deaths as hazardous conditions linger and motorists stay cautious.
Readable figures show poll taxes paid 2 1 040 exemptions and qualified voters 1 464 with a poll tax deadline on January 31.
The New Year holiday death toll in Texas reached four, with three traffic deaths and one fatal shooting. Mrs W C Gordon 79 died 3 p.m. yesterday at Callan Hospital Rotan and funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Thirty seventh Street Church of Christ with C Dale Brooks officiating. Burial in Snyder Cemetery under Bell Funeral Home direction. Survivors include four daughters and five sons, plus siblings and grandchildren.
CHARLOTTE N C Two Camp Lejeune Marine sergeants were killed when their car collided with two Seaboard Air Line trains near the city. The accident occurred today and authorities are investigating the cause and sending condolences to the families.
