Scurry County gins and farmers finish the old year with a bumper crop. Weather has kept pickup steady as ginners report 31,014 bales ginned and 2,811 waiting across the county, with several gins detailing counts and yard waits.
The Snyder Daily News and most local firms will observe New Year’s Day as a holiday. Banks, government offices, and retail businesses will close. regular business resumes Tuesday January 2 with the next Daily News issue.
Texan humorist and author Boyce House, famed for Texas tales, died in his bed at a Fort Worth hotel. The 65 year old, recently ill after a heart attack last September, had been executive vice president of the Texas based Association of Consumer Finance Companies. House authored I Give You Texas in 1943 and Tall Talk From Texas among other volumes.

Snyder area firms announce gifts for the first baby born after midnight in 1962. Residents qualify with birth time certified by the attending physician. In a tie the committee selects recipients. The Associated Press reports ideal Texas weather through New Year's Day with dry highways and a dry Cotton Bowl for 78,000 fans in Dallas. Morning fog caused fatal crashes near Austin and Rio Grande City while skies were mostly clear and temperatures ranged from a frigid 19 degrees in Dalhart to mid 60s in the afternoon.
Five survivors of an autotrain crash near Abilene were flown to Brooke General Hospital in San Antonio for treatment. Survivors include Mrs. Ethel Johnson and her son David, and Mrs. Darlene Alfano and her two daughters Rose Linda and Donna. Two children, Patricia Ann Alfano and Monte Johnson Jr., were killed. Johnson and Alfano were wives of Air Force personnel assigned to Dyess Air Force Base.
Banks in Snyder raise savings rates as a new regulation caps deposits. Regular savings gain 3.2 percent compounded semi annually, with at least six months before payout. Certificates of Deposit reach 4 percent for 12 months or more, others vary by term. Local lenders expect loan rates to adjust. Max West says no SAVE changes planned at Snyder Savings and Loan.
Paul M. Butler, longtime Democratic national chairman, died of a heart attack at 56 after a respiratory infection and diabetes complications. He resigned as chair in 1960 and was known for fiery leadership and liberal stance opposing segregation. President Kennedy expressed grief, calling him a courageous leader whose counsel was missed.
Preliminary arrangements are completed for the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet to be held in the high school cafeteria and auditorium on January 30 at 7 pm. Dr Walter Kerr renowned Methodist minister from Tyler will speak, with Rev Harry Vanderpool as master of ceremonies and new Chamber officers to be installed.
