Vice president-elect Mondale says his main duty is to advise President-elect Carter. He will join the National Security Council, sit on key advisory groups, and receive CIA briefings to inform government-wide guidance. He resigned his Senate seat at midnight to begin duties.
In northwest Harris County a hot air balloon went down near the Houston Hempstead highway, killing two men and burning them severely. A woman survived with injuries, and authorities have not identified the victims.

A 17 year old girl, Carol Holder of Bedford, Tex, was in serious condition after a lion mauled her at an animal clinic in Farmers Branch. A policeman shot the lion with three blasts. the lion died at the scene.
