A major blizzard coats the northeast with up to a foot of snow. Ice injuries snap power lines as travel slows and officials study annexations and a $900,000 courthouse bond vote.
The steel industry told President Eisenhower that union wage and benefit demands block a peace pact. R Conrad Cooper of U S Steel testified that unions recently boosted terms, worsening the eight month deadlock. The Taylor board prepares a report for Eisenhower.
The United States lifts itself to resume nuclear weapons tests at any time with advance notice, signaling a shift from a moratorium to a voluntary suspension. President Eisenhower leads a 15 official briefing as Geneva talks persist and inspection hurdles remain unresolved. The move anticipates possible retaliation or escalation in Washington Moscow talks. Institutions named include Herter Gates Twining McCone Wadsworth Fisk.
The United States Britain and France propose a Paris summit for May 16 with Soviet Premier Khrushchev to decide on future talks. White House spokesman Hagerty says Khrushchev’s acceptance is not yet known. The Western trio waited to inform Moscow with notes delivered by Eisenhower Macmillan and De Gaulle.
Official word from the ASC records that skip-row planting rules remain unchanged for 1960. The Dept of Agriculture backed by protests had proposed counting skip-row planting as solid cotton for acreage allotments, but plans to implement the change were dropped.
Weather report notes high around 56 in Snyder on Monday with a 27 degree reading at 7:30 am. South Central and East Texas expect increasing clouds through Wednesday with little temperature change and lows 32 to 42 tonight. North Central and Southwest Texas see increasing clouds and steady temps with lows 30 to 40 tonight. Northwest Texas same trend with lows 22 to 32. West Gulf winds 12 to 20 mph and fair skies through Wednesday.
