Wacil McNair recalls a teens era winter misadventure between Christmas and New Year. Four youths camped in a self built log cabin in East Texas woods facing a blue norther. They endured freezing cold and scarce water then drained their last sardines on the fourth morning as transportation arrived.
The 1975 Texas Legislature enacted major laws to start January 1 1976. Civil safeguards include DPS power to cancel auto inspection station licenses for fraud and a new boat and motor title system. New mining regulation by the Railroad Commission and expanded child care institution oversight also begin. Environmentalists backed strip mine controls with five to ten year permits and land restoration plans.
On December 28 events included Spain recognizing Mexico’s independence in 1836, Iowa joining the Union in 1846, Woodrow Wilson’s 1856 birth, chewing gum patent in 1869, Calcutta bombing in 1942, JFK greeting Cuban prisoners in 1962, Skylab 3 completing half its 84 day mission in 1973, and later notes on Vietnam, Basque separatists, and Nicaragua violence.
Snyder reports show temperatures from 31 to 60 degrees with multiple cold mornings and a slow warmup. Precipitation includes 2 inches of snow and repeated rain chances across regions, with Monday to Wednesday showing showers and increasing cloudiness in some zones.
AP report from Athens says the assassination of Richard Welch, Athens CIA station chief, shocked Americans and raised security at the U.S. Embassy. While officials call it an isolated act, the murder tempers fragile efforts to thaw U.S.-Greek relations after 1974. Greek officials noted Welch was a high-value target as three masked gunmen killed him after a Christmas party, sparking heightened protection for diplomats. Welch’s death follows a period of improving ties and congressional moves to curb U.S. arms to Turkey, with Ambassador Jack Kubisch taking a cautious role in easing suspicion of American meddling.
Tokyo AP reports China will release three Soviet airmen after a 21 month detainment for a Mi4 helicopter flight into Sinkiang. Investigations found the incursion was accidental. Crew: Capt. A. S. Kurvatov Lt. A. F. Uskov Jr. Lt. V. G. Buchelnikov. Helicopter and equipment returned to the Soviets.
Registration for the mid winter min session resumes tomorrow at the registrar. The 10 day session runs from December 30 to January 10 with classes four and a half hours daily Monday through Saturday except January 1. Students earn three college credits with Texas residents paying $36 per course. A schedule of courses is available in the registrar’s office.
President Ford may ski in New Hampshire as part of a campaign trip for the Republican primary, with White House aides noting the trip is for enjoyment but likely a campaign event. Ford plans one or two trips to New Hampshire and Florida, while Reagan starts full time campaigning January 5.
At least 700 Indian miners were trapped after a coal mine in Bihar caved in following an explosion and flooding near Dhanbad, 160 miles northwest of Calcutta. Officials warned the toll could be higher as details emerged. In Snyder, Christmas snow gave way to sunshine, ending a white Christmas with four to five inches of snow varying by location.
In East Harlem, Debra Mackall and her boyfriend Alfred Forte were charged with two counts of murder after the bodies of 2-year-old Rodell Mackall and 4-year-old Candy Cunningham were found naked and burned in a rubble strewn lot. Police believe the killings occurred at Forte's Queens apartment days before a missing persons report.
