Arctic front blankets much of the nation with snow sleet and rain. Temperatures fall to 17 degrees below zero at Clintonville Wisconsin and reach 12 to 16 below in several Midwest cities. Roads ice up from Pennsylvania to the Carolinas as snow dusts the interior and Vermont to Michigan report subzero readings.

British researcher Dr. Philip R J Burch says bomb test fallout may only slightly raise cancer incidence. He notes radiation could trigger cancer in vulnerable individuals already prone to spontaneous cellular changes, with background levels causing about 0.1 to 1 percent of spontaneous tumors and fallout unlikely to raise cancers more than 0.04 percent above natural levels.
Cleo Springs Oklahoma AP reports a young man armed with a sawed off shotgun attempted to rob the Cleo State Bank at bank president Leo Morris home. Morris said a time lock protected the vault and safe, deterring the heist as the youth left after about four minutes.
The Christmas week cold snap pushed temperatures near freezing across Texas from San Antonio to Houston. At 4 am, Junction 32 showed 20 degrees, San Antonio and Palacios about 33, Houston 33, and Galveston 44 with Dalhart down to 18. Skies cleared over South Texas as Panhandle and North Central regions saw high clouds.
A Evansville family tragedy leaves Mrs James Kirkpatrick 36 and children Eugene 9 Lydia May 6 Judy Ann 4 Michael 2 dead after a two story frame home blaze. The father and five other children escape unharmed with Diane 14 suffering a back injury.
A federal grand jury indicted state senator Wendell Harris and Leon Patterson of Baton Rouge along with Lawrence A. Hall on wiretapping charges. The case stems from intercepted conversations between Rabbi Marvin Reznikoff and Wade Mackie and between Mackie and Rev. Benjamin Irvin Cheney. Harris denied the charges calling them politically motivated.
London subway trains halted as the Arctic weather continued to grip Britain. Snow fog and ice spread nationwide with freezing temperatures reported in most areas.
The Guaranty Savings & Loan Association plans to display a million dollars during its January 2 10 opening week at a new San Jose branch. Wells Fargo will source the cash from the Federal Reserve Bank San Francisco and an armored carrier will transport it. The money will be protected under plastic and guarded around the clock with Lloyds of London providing insurance. Visitors during opening week receive a penny sample.
A series of blasts at the Whitaker Atlas Supply Co powder plant in Norton Virginia leveled or damaged every home in Sutherland, injuring 26. Five explosions followed a fire, with the final blast shattering windows up to ten miles away and prompting evacuations. Twenty one treated at Norton Hospital, five seriously hurt.
A chartered bus and a car collided head on three miles east of Pacific Missouri on U S 66. The car driver, 23 year old Joseph McNamee of Pacific, died. Thirty one passengers were injured, ten seriously. The bus continued after impact, swerved across the highway and toppled down an embankment.
