A forecast across Texas regions notes increasing cloudiness and mild to cool conditions. Northwest Texas expects snow showers spreading west and north by Saturday with highs from 35 to 62. Northeast Texas stays mostly cloudy and warmer Saturday with highs 58 to 68. Central and West Texas show mild conditions with showers possible in places, while elevations in the west may reach 40 at the extreme south.
North Vietnam refused to admit H Ross Perot and two gift planes for American prisoners of war. Israeli warplanes attacked Arab guerrillas in Jordan after they fired on an Israeli patrol and placed two mines near a settlement. The raid burned two Jordanian army vehicles and caused light anti aircraft fire. Other clashes along the cease fire line continued with casualties on the Suez front. Arab saboteurs blew a railway in the Gaza Strip as Egypt and Israel exchanged artillery. Nasser met in Tripoli with Libyan leaders amid dissatisfaction over the summit. Yasir Arafat arrived in Algiers ahead of a Palestinian guerrilla conference.
President Nixon says the 1971 budget needs offsetting a projected 2.5 billion revenue loss from Congress tax reform. He plans to sign or veto the bill with caution, scales defense share, and will shape the State of the Union for January 22 as he travels to California for budget talks.
Vice President Spiro T. Agnew begins a 37,000-mile, 10 nation Asian tour hoping to visit Vietnam. He and his wife depart Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland aboard Air Force 2, refueling at Travis Air Force Base before continuing to Honolulu, the first leg of the trip.
Texas recorded 28 violent deaths by Christmas week with 18 from motor vehicle crashes. others from shootings fires and stabbings. The DPS warned 54 more could die on roads before Sunday midnight. Victims include Alfonso Renondon 18 Fort Worth killed near Burleson and Sheila Miller 3 who died in a Texarkana motel fire.
A major winter storm swept the East with over a foot of snow in many places and heavy winds. Tornadoes hit Kaplan Louisiana leaving one dead and eight injured as the system moved north through New England.
The Christmas travel period toll rose to 234 deaths as snow and freezing drizzle hindered drivers across the East and parts of the Midwest and West. The count began at 6 p.m. Wednesday and ends at midnight Sunday.
Six year old Kathy Adams who vanished after a ride on her new bicycle was found alive in a furnished but unoccupied farm house near Little River Kansas. Fireman Joe Birka said she appeared well despite freezing temperatures and she was taken to the Little River Hospital for a checkup.
