U S traffic deaths on Christmas day totaled 268 for 30 hours ending Wednesday night, with 215 traffic deaths, 27 in fires and 26 in other causes. Ohio and New York led fatalities. the toll surpassed the National Safety Council forecast and previous holiday records.
The Christmas period saw at least 18 deaths with traffic crashes claiming 12. Victims include Willis Gibson 18 of Lamesa Teresa Nash 6 of Lovington N.M. in a two car crash near Lamesa. Other fatalities span Houston Beaumont Brenham Temple San Antonio Spur and Beeville with multiple gun and stabbing deaths and a bus injury casualty. Police hunt five teen suspects.
The Agriculture Department notes cotton gins jammed as pickers rush the Plains crop. Dusty winds slow peanut harvests in West Central Texas while High Plains wheat and Low Rolling Plains wheat contend with cold and dust. Oats in the East suffer blight. citrus and lettuce harvests rise, spinach moves, onions grow with little freeze damage. Livestock feed remains plentiful though winter stocks ease. grazing oats decline in East Texas.
The Navy announces trials of various aircraft lights to aid collision avoidance. Two planes will fly tonight or within a week over the Washington Baltimore region for observers to see the colored lights against city air traffic. A spokesman notes differing colors and brightness levels will be used.
Scurry Countians enjoyed a calm Christmas with little excitement. Sheriff and city police reported minimal activity, fire crews only extinguished a small grass fire with no damage, and ambulances made no calls during the holiday.
Congress returns Jan 7 to a tense session with rising defense spending and debt ceilings. Aims include missiles funding and possible education aid while tax cuts fade. Social Security expansion and higher Social Security taxes are also likely amid re election pressures.
Greenville reports the death of M. E. Dewberry a 61 year old bridge contractor from burns suffered in the New Beckham Hotel fire on December 11 Joshua Carter was found dead in the ruins the day after. Dewberry had moved to the hotel while working on a new highway segment of U S 67.
Mild temperatures and scattered showers shaped holiday weather from the Texas coast to the Panhandle. Skies cleared after Christmas rains, with Benavides recording 2 inches, and a statewide mix of sun and clouds forecast through Thursday and into Friday.
In Moscow the Soviet Union forwarded a seven point peace plan to foreign missions and parliaments, mirroring Bulganin’s letters ahead of NATO talks. Pravda scoffed at Eisenhower and Dulles while warning a foreign ministers conference would fuel attacks on the Soviet Union. The plan calls for halt of atomic and hydrogen weapons and tests, a nuclear arms free zone in Central Europe, troop reductions, a nonaggression pact, no force in the Middle East, and greater trade plus cultural exchange.
Indonesia will guarantee the security of non Dutch businesses as government restricts Dutch owned enterprises in a 32 week campaign tied to the Netherlands refusal over New Guinea. Western business fear mount as clashes in South Celebes leave casualties.
Mrs. Jodie Monroe, 87, longtime Scurry County resident, died at home at 2312 Avenue M at 7 30 this morning. Funeral at 3 tomorrow at First Christian Church with Rev. John Reaves officiating. Burial in Snyder Cemetery under Bell Funeral Home. Survived by one daughter Mrs Hugh Taylor two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Husband Jodie Monroe died July 22 1955. Pallbearers listed. Active member of First Christian Church and Order of the Eastern Star.
Chattanooga criminal court judge Raulston Schoolfield links a Nashville wake to calls for thorough Hamilton County investigations. He cites a $10,000 shortage in City Court clerk’s office, an $8,940 gap plus $2,007 unexplained, and a probe into expressway land deals with a local racketeer.
Sen. Sparkman heads the Senate Housing subcommittee and will hold hearings on why the White House waited to release 177 million dollars for military housing urban renewal and cooperative programs. He urged looser money policy and lower FHA mortgage rates to spur home construction and aid the economy as housing starts lag. The AGC projected 68 billion dollars in construction outlays next year, with gains in residential, public works, and nonresidential activity. Small Business Administrator Barnes also predicted a solid year for housing and public works.
East Texas stays fair and mild with a chance of showers this afternoon and tonight. South Central Texas reports clear to partly cloudy and mild conditions with showers near the coast later. North Central and West Texas see increasing clouds and warmer tonight, with Friday turning windy and colder in parts.
Indonesia's Lt. Col. Sukendro claims foreign nationals aided the November 13 assassination attempt on President Sukarno. He later named two Malayans among 71 arrests linked to the plot, which involved four grenades and left 10 dead and 140 wounded.
President and Mrs. Eisenhower will depart tomorrow for about a week at their Gettysburg farm to work on the State of the Union and other messages for Congress. Hagerty said a Gettysburg conference with Budget Director Brundage and others is planned. The trip follows a NATO Paris meeting and precedes Civil Rights Commission events. The couple hosted Christmas with family at the White House as grandchildren arrived.
