Events noted include 1814 Treaty of Ghent ending the War of 1812, death of Vasco da Gama in 1524, Edinburgh Castle surrender in 1650, Ku Klux Klan origin in 1865, Verdi's Aida debut in 1871, Darlan assassination in 1942, Eisenhower to lead Allied invasion in 1943, plus recent disaster and political items from the last decade.

Bering Tank Co Inc of Dallas bid $29 930 for erecting an overhead storage tank the only item not in the prime contract. Universal Tank and Iron Inc of Tulsa was second low on the tank at $30 264.
President Johnson plans a meeting with Pope Paul VI in Rome to explain U.S. Vietnam policy. The Vatican urged a halt to bombing North Vietnam, while Italian and American sources warned of possible anti American protests. Johnson’s trip speculated to include refueling in Madrid en route to Australia for Holt memorial rites amid talk of a historic around the world presidential flight.
Charles R. Deere, brother of Sgt. Donald T. Deere killed in Vietnam, has been assigned to Company B of the 20th Infantry, 11th Infantry Brigade. He arrived at Qui Nhon after landing from Ha waii, with his wife’s letter confirming the move.
A night blaze swept through Mrs. Wilson Connell’s ranch home 25 miles north of town in Kent County Friday, destroying the wood house. Firemen arrived around 9 30 p.m. smoke filled the rooms and the roof broke through. Only the chimney remained by morning. Officials suspect wax from Christmas decorations as a possible ignition point.
Winners in the Yale Jaycees Lighting contest were announced at the Friday luncheon. Indoor division first went to Kenneth Lynch, second to Wendell Rehm. religious division first to Gene Shelburne, second to Mrs. Gerald Walton. Prizes supplied by Texas Electric, first prize a yard light, second an electric room heater.
The Snyder Daily News will not publish Monday Christmas Day and will resume Tuesday, December 26. Local business activity slowed to a halt late Saturday as last minute shoppers frenzied. Retail stores remained closed last and offices closed earlier for the holidays.
West Berliners face a fourth straight Christmas without passes to visit East Berlin as East Germany maintains the wall barrier. Some elderly East Berliners receive hardship passes, but the vast majority of 3.3 million Berliners cannot cross. West German Foreign Minister Willy Brandt called the pass issue part of an East German campaign to sow unease among residents.
