In Catanzaro Italy sixty people were killed when a railway car packed with Christmas shoppers and workers collapsed or derailed. An official inquiry was expected to determine cause and responsiblity.
Estelle Swan of Snyder announces Democratic bid for District Clerk. She is the wife of local dirt contractor T T Swan and has four family members in Snyder and Fluvanna. A 40 year resident of Scurry County she has lived in China Grove Dunn Ira and Knapp areas. The item notes her first run for public office.
Curt Wise Hermleigh school superintendent was injured in a freak car accident on a Midland Odessa highway. He was hospitalized in Odessa with serious neck and back injuries described as satisfactory condition. J W Green of Odessa assisted Wise after a two vehicle collision and was involved in moving the car to a service station before taking Wise to Medical Center Hospital.
Winners in the annual Jaycee home decoration contest were announced by Jaycee chairman Bill Green. Clifford Chandler won first prize of 25 dollars for his yard display at 211 Thirty-third Street, Gerald Walton took second for door decor at 3713 Avenue U, and Glenn Barron placed third for a window scene at 3214 Forty-second Street. The contest favored religious decorations and organizers thanked all participants for high quality decorations across town.
Funeral services for Henry Pies Kelley 72 of Crosscut Tex are set for 2 p.m. Sunday in May Texas with Rev. Ross Grace officiating. He died Friday night at his daughter’s home and is survived by his wife Bertha Ester Webb Kelley two daughters a son a sister four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Burial is Mt. Pleasant Cemetery near May with Bell Funeral Home in charge and pallbearers named.
Justice of the Peace W C David ruled the death a personal safety gunshot incident. Eugenio Salazar, 54, died early Saturday after a shooting around 10 am Friday three miles south of Ira where the Salazar family had lived for about a month. A two week family argument preceded the event. Funeral services are pending at Bolger Funeral Home. Salazar is survived by his wife and three children.
