United Steelworkers general counsel Arthur J. Goldberg says the union will ask a US District Court in Pittsburgh to order a four-cent-an-hour cost-of-living wage increase effective January. The strike by half a million steel workers ended November 7 after a 116 day stoppage.
The Associated Press reports at least 37 deaths in Texas over a few days as Christmas travel spikes. Three teenage brothers Willie Hein Paul Unland and Charles Unland died when their car hit a freight train near Lyford. Others include Lisa Mayea who drowned in the Neches River, James Michell killed in Garland, and Burah Smith found dead in Dallas. The piece also covers steel industry labor talks and a Taft-Hartley injunction amid a potential new strike.

Readings show high 57 and low 32 with 7 30 a m temperature 40 degrees. Expect considerable cloudiness and mild conditions across East South Central and North Central Texas through Friday. Northwest and Southwest Texas also mild with occasional rain possible Friday into Friday night. West Gulf winds 12 to 22 mph with partly cloudy skies through Friday.
A broad winter storm blanket covered the northern half of the country with heavy snow in the Midwest reaching a foot or more in places. The system disrupted travel and caused numerous traffic deaths, with 23 or more fatalities in the East and Midwest. Snow and gusty winds continued into the afternoon with hazardous driving conditions.
A private plane crashed near Amon Carter Airport injuring none but killing three people. The flight was en route from Cheyenne Wyoming to Dallas when fog and flying difficulties caused the accident about 15 miles north-northwest of Fort Worth between the two cities.
Mrs. Ola B. Leath of 2612 Avenue R died this morning at Cogdell Memorial Hospital. Funeral arrangements are pending at Bell Funeral Home.
The Jaycees Religious Acquviies Committee announced winners led by Linda Miller of Avenue U in first place, Mrs. Fred Marr of Thirty-sixth Place second, and A. M. Blalock of Avenue 3219 third. Jerry Edwards, committee chair, said judging was difficult and urged the public to view the displays.
