Union President David McDonald announced that about 93 percent of 35,000 participating steelworkers backed rejecting the last company offer. The secret postcard poll involved roughly 500,000 members as federal mediation talks and a Taft Hartley vote loom.
A boxcar loaded with cotton bales on the RS&P siding suffered 2100 in damage to 15 bales last night around 730. Water damage to the remaining 85 bales could not yet be estimated. Agent Stanford Land said burning since departure from California is likely and firemen opened a hole in the top to extinguish the blaze.
A fragmented forecast indicates across Texas cooler temperatures tonight with lows from 22 to 45 degrees regionally. Areas such as South Central and Northwest Texas expect mostly cloudy to partly cloudy skies with light rain or none, and winds easterly 15 to 22 mph in some zones.
The Snyder Chamber of Commerce mails ballots for six two year directors from twelve nominees including Hugh Boren Jr and Roy Burgess. Holdover directors remain. retiring members include Dr John Blum. Ballots due by December 31 with results announced before the January board meeting.
Three San Angelo residents face burglary charges after authorities recovered part of the loot from the Sportsman's Headquarters theft on December 2. Investigators with District Attorney Wayland Holt and San Angelo police recovered rifles pistols and a shotgun at multiple locations tied to the suspects. Two additional suspects were being transferred to Snyder authorities, with more weapons still missing.
In Houston and Texas City striking union members got Christmas packages checks and toys from fellow union members. Across Dallas El Paso San Antonio Waco and Fort Worth donors provided funds to help workers through the holiday season. The Texas AFL CIO says Machinists Lodges 12 and 2007 at Mission Manufacturing received $25 per worker plus $5 per dependent via the Christmas Fund from the Consolidated Stewards Assn of District 37.
Six persons perished in a head on collision on Highway 350 about 32 miles southwest of Snyder at 7 30 p m Two cars one a 1955 Oldsmobile carrying Mr and Mrs Haney and Robert Bearden the other a 1952 Chevrolet carrying Sgt Elmo Buford Mrs Catherine Buford and daughter battled near a hill The wreckage spread across the highway and ditches as patrols and local crews responded Funeral plans and obituaries followed for Bearden and the Haney family with services set in Snyder and graves at Hillside Memorial Gardens The Buford party was en route from Altus Air Force Base to Midland and was transferred to Lawton Okla for burial in a separate service The 1959 county death toll rose with other statewide fatalities reported late Tuesday and early Wednesday
A morning blaze destroyed the Piggly Wiggly Grocery and damaged two other shops in the same building in COLORADO CITY. The C R Anthony Department Store suffered a collapsed mezzanine and most stock in that area was ruined. White Auto Store incurred heavy smoke and water damage as investigators linked the fire to compressors in the grocery. Loss value not yet set.
In Houston Texas Walter W Williams last survivor of the Civil War is eulogized after dying at age 117. Army troops, a firing squad, and a drum corps escort his body from the Civil Courts Building to South Main Baptist church where services honor him as a national symbol of immortality. The procession proceeds to Franklin Texas for burial with military rites.
A numbing arctic blast hit the Northeast after a heavy snowstorm that marked winter's arrival. Snow and bitter cold shut roads, trains, and flights with 19 deaths blamed on the storm. Western and northern New York, New England, and the Midwest faced substantial snowfall and plummeting temperatures.
