Rescue operations on Myrdaljokull glacier near Reykjavik are hampered by icy gales and a potential blizzard as crews hunt for three U S Navy Neptune crash survivors. Despite sightings of signal flares and an object moving toward supplies, visibility remains poor and communication with ground parties is limited.
Scurry County ginners report 11 305 bales of cotton ginned to date, up about 4 000 from a month ago, higher than 1951's level at the same time. Weather and damp conditions may extend ginning into three weeks or more, with varied county totals for Snyder Hermleigh via Grove Ira Ina dale and Dunn.
Mrs. Portia Howe of Akion Minnesota endures a vigil in Tokyo awaiting word on her son Pfc. Richard R. Tenneson held at Panmunjom with 21 other Americans. She says she has not given up and plans to stay through December 23 deadline before returning to Minneapolis for Christmas.
In Versailles on December 19 the French Parliament failed to elect a new president after the sixth ballot. Premier Joseph Laniel remained 56 votes short of a majority as deputies and senators split along right left and center. The seventh ballot is scheduled for tomorrow at 3 p.m. local time.
In Panmunjom on December 20, the UN urged 22 American POWs to judge whether to stay with communism. The December 23 deadline allows them to face American teams and choose repatriation or return home. If unresolved, they become absent without leave then deserters. Indian reports say the men may still be in their compound on December 25 and even hold a Christmas athletic meet.
A five year old boy, David Lynn Adams of Monterey Park, was struck and killed by a Union Pacific City of St. Louis streamliner while his mother Elena Roessler 26 sought bail for her husband William Roessler 25. Deputies reported the child was confused by the train whistle as his mother shopped for Christmas and arranged bail.
Kyoko Araki, a Japanese war bride in Tokyo, reads a stark letter from Cpl. Claude Batchelor of Kermit Texas, held in Panmunjom after refusing to quit communism. He writes of changed beliefs and asks her to seek guidance from the Japanese Communist party.
A mother in Kermit recalls her son Pfc. Claude Batchelor, 24, an American war prisoner in Korea who writes from a neutral zone in Tokyo that he cannot return home, citing communist ideas and unspecified circumstances. The letter to his Japanese wife Kyoko Arabki describes grief, longing, and doubt from family members awaiting repatriation.
Still unidentified killer Jacques Mor nard awaits parole in Mexico City after 13 years of imprisonment for the 1940 assassination of Leon Trotsky. He has claimed various names and nationalities, with current belief favoring Ramon del Rio Mercader. Parole eligibility arises at two thirds of the sentence, though Mor nard has not yet requested release and may not speak to reporters.
At least 10 convicts tunneled out from Southern Michigan Prison in Jackson. They terrorized a nearby home, stole a pistol and car, then fled. Police recaptured four near the wrecked vehicle, with additional suspects still at large as the manhunt continued.
In Oklahoma City on December 19 policemen searched a screening room for 27 reels of obscene films seized by vice raiders. The collection yielded no evidence as cars were shown several comedies travelogues on Navajo Indians and Texas State Fair publicity films.
Maryville Missouri December 19 The drama of the playboy and his mistress ended with their burial in simple ceremonies after the kidnapping and killing of Bobby Greenlease. Carl Austin Hall 34 and Bonnie Brown Heady 41 were executed in Missouri for the ransom case. Mrs Heady was buried beside her lover in Pleasanton Kansas. Hall was interred in a family plot near Clearmont Missouri. About 15 people attended including Mrs Baker aunt to Heady. Funeral pallbearers were six funeral home employees.
Texas moves toward new anti Communist measures after a court ruled no law exists to bar a Communist dominated union. Gov. Shivers may push for a special session in 1954 to consider legislation outlawing the Communist party and affiliates. Attorney General Ben Shepperd outlined proposals to bar subversive organizations and to empower a board to deny union officer status for subversive ties.
President Eisenhower wrapped a three day gathering with Republican leaders and promised a program based on the 1952 platform. He said the policy will emphasize security we ll being and economic stability and will be disclosed publicly in early January. Senate and House leaders praised progress and predicted swift enactment of the proposed program.
A late Saturday crash near Nolanville Texas left at least two dead when a car skidded on wet pavement and struck another car before crashing into a Southwest Transit Co bus traveling between Fort Hood and Mrs J W Sims who runs a local store. The fatalities were believed to be occupants of one of the cars.
