Rick Snyder, 6th grader, was carried aloft during a Vikings 49ers halftime show when a 25 foot balloon broke its tether. He swam 25 feet to shore after landing in the Minnesota River and rejoined the game, which Minnesota won 10 7. His parents are noted balloonists and he says he may ride again in the future.

Weekend Violence Claims 40 Lives in Texas
The Associated Press tallies 40 weekend fatalities in Texas from Friday 6 p.m. to Sunday midnight including 26 traffic deaths. Victims include grocery clerk Vernie A. Gillapsy 57 shot at his Dallas store, two 13 year olds electrocuted in Pearsall, and Diane Lee Jackson 25 stabbed in a Houston parking lot. Additional deaths occurred in San Antonio El Paso Mt. Bus crashes near Gap kill seven Eastern Star members
A bus carrying 40 Eastern Star lodge members and guests skidded on a snowy highway in Gap Pennsylvania, hit a power pole, and toppled in a field. Seven women from the Philadelphia area died and 34 were injured while delivering Christmas gifts to a home for the aged.
