Civil Air Patrol found a three-year-old girl alive in Kerrville area wreckage of a missing single engine plane. Shera Sneed survived in stable but undetermined condition with a fractured arm and leg. Four others including Jerry Sneed his wife Suzie and their six-year-old son Shannon were killed.
A fire on the fourth floor of Aquinas Hall at Providence College, likely sparked by a hair dryer, killed seven women and injured at least 15. Two victims leaped to the snow as firefighters arrived. hundreds were evacuated as the blaze was brought under control about an hour after the 2:56 a.m. alarm.

Snyder City Council approved its share of funds for a three agency tennis court project at a special meeting. The bid from C B Thompson of Lubbock was the low bid, but the total cost was about sixty thousand dollars higher than original estimates. The city’s share would be 73000166.67 dollars, with the school district and county sharing the rest, as discussions continued with the Snyder Independent School District and Scurry County.
City Engineer Jim Dower outlined a cheaper drainage solution for Park Place Addition to the City Council. A proposed underground storm sewer would have cost about $30,000, but lowering an alley and nearby Kerrville Avenue may divert water south of 44th Street. J.L. Moore, planning a 50 to 100 plus home project, favored city participation yet the council voted 4-2 against funding. Moore said city help was not critical to his plan while avoiding added costs. The council also agreed to work with the Scurry County Industrial Foundation on leases for the Wickes building and approved a $650 bid to sell a 1967 garbage truck not used for a year.

Southwestern Bell manager Bill Gilliland says about two weeks will cover delivery of the 1977 directory with nearly 11 000 books mailed from 18 000 printed.
