Carter weighs cabinet picks in Atlanta meetings

President-elect Carter holds meetings at the governor's mansion with candidates for treasury defense attorney general and housing posts. Harold Brown and W. Michael Blumenthal are floated for defense and treasury, with Rep. Bob Bergland Sen. James Eastland and Ray Marshall among others discussed for attorney general and economics posts. FCC Ruling Uphheld on Agency Authority over Telephones

The Supreme Court refused to decide who has final authority on telephone equipment used for intra and interstate communications. The Court let stand a 4th Circuit ruling that the FCC holds final say in such equipment. Justice Powell did not participate.

Court rejects Ray plea on MLK assassination case

The court refused to review James Earl Ray's effort to withdraw his guilty plea in the MLK assassination. It declined his claim of being framed by the FBI and police and coerced by his lawyer. A congressional committee authorized 6.5 million dollars for the first year of investigations into the Kennedy and King assassinations.

No Action On Gilmore Stalls Utah Execution Stay

The Utah case of condemned murderer Gary Mark Gilmore remains on hold as state officials await the Oregon appeal by his mother Bessie Gilmore of Milwauke Ore. The high court took no action today and scheduled an extraordinary session for next Monday delaying further action.

Rhodesian PM Says Geneva Talks Lag Further Behind

PUC cuts Bell rate hike. $63.4 million saved, long distance rise planned

The Texas Public Utility Commission reduced Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. proposed increases by over 80 percent, approving a $57.8 million rise vs the $298.3 million request. Residential rates vary by city, while intrastate long distance charges rise by about $65 million. Pay calls and directory assistance see new charges. Bell may appeal.

Santa to Visit Snyder Next Saturday

Snyder Chamber officials say Santa Claus will arrive at Winston Field at 10 a.m. Saturday for his annual visit. After landing he will hand out candy to children, then be escorted downtown to meet area kids until 3 p.m. The event marks the start of late store hours the following week.

Weather Outlook for Snyder and West Texas

Readings show Snyder with 7 am Sunday low of 26 to 27 degrees and a high near 46 Saturday. West Texas expects decreasing clouds tonight with rain in the southern portion and a fair Tuesday with highs in the 50s to 60s and lows in the 20s to 30s.

Snyder SHS Journalist Wins State Editorial Championship

Kay Ellington, senior at Snyder High School, won the state champion editorial writer title at the Texas High School Press Association meeting in Denton. She also placed fourth in sports news writing and earned an All-Texas rating for her editorial. Ellington is editor-in-chief of the school newspaper and literary magazine, president of the Inklings, and a National Honor Society member.
