President Eisenhower and Secretary Dulles meet to press for united Allied stance against Soviet pressure on West Berlin. Dulles plans Paris talks after hospital discharge, aiming to resolve German issues and counter Khrushchev’s Berlin proposal with potential Western counterproposals.
A new cold front moved into North and West Texas Friday, lowering temperatures to 28–29 in Lubbock, Dalhart, and Amarillo with clear skies ahead south of the front. Temperatures across the state ranged from 28 to 45 degrees as Oklahoma and nearby states expected snow. no precipitation was reported in Texas.
The United States pressed the U N to denounce the Moscow and Budapest governments for their reign of terror in Hungary. Debate continued with Western members accusing Soviet bloc of retribution against Nagy Maleter and other patriots from the 1956 uprising.
An New York Central passenger train struck a school bus at a rural grade crossing east of Essex Ontario killing two boys on board. The bus carried 10 students to Holy Names Parish School. four children plus the driver were treated at a local center.
A Santa Fe freight train and a 1958 Ford station wagon collided at the Avenue R crossing around 10:30 AM. The car owned by Central Texas Service Co. and driven by Hugh Winsett Nance, 3104 Fortieth Street, was demolished but the driver avoided serious injuries. Nance was taken to Cogdell Memorial Hospital for checks. train crew were T. N. Bickers and L. N. Foster of Slaton.
Interior Secretary Fred A. Seaton said he hopes to resign soon to return to private business and spend more time with his family. He gave no date, arrived for the Western Regional Republican Conference, and noted his ownership of several Midwest newspapers and radio stations. He will fly back to Washington on Saturday.
A federal court demands Alabama officials reveal records to the U S Civil Rights Commission. Macon County registrars E P Livingston and Grady Rogers resign claiming intimidation but will appear again December 19. Alabama Attorney General John Patterson vows vigorous opposition and may move to set aside Johnson orders. Other officials named include Circuit Judge George C Wallace and registrars J W Spencer W A Stokes and M P Evans.
The Teamsters Executive Board voted to appeal US District Judge F Dickinson Letts's ruling mandating reform and monitoring. James Hoffa dismissed the decision as another fight and warned the union may cancel its Chicago convention if reforms are not completed.
Snyder reports show Thursday highs near 70 degrees and a 23 degree low with 7 30 a m reading of 28. East Texas remains partly cloudy with no major temperature changes and interior lows in the 30s. South Central and North Central Texas stay partly cloudy with a modest warm up. West Texas and South Plains/Pecos Valley stay partly cloudy with a small rise in temperatures tonight.
Two men were arrested and charged after a Continental Bus System driver was beaten near Fort Worth. L. R. Thomas 36 and A. L. James 40 were accused under Texas right to work law at Arlington. Victim identified as H. G. French 38. Report says one assailant struck while two others stood by.
Snyder Tigers edged Brownwood 53 52 as Tom S Lubbock Westerners defeated Childress 62 44 to start the Sixth Canyon Reef Invitational. Semifinal pairings set for tonight, with seeds and consolation rounds scheduled through tomorrow’s early afternoon.
Attorney General Will Wilson said 285 suits are now pending against 377 Texas small loan firms for violating the 10 percent annual interest cap. Most suits target brokerage plan operators. the Smith group leads with connections to about 175 firms. Test cases will be heard in Corpus Christi and Austin to set precedent for the remaining actions.
The Soviet Union issued a new bid for a summit to discuss international tension, including Berlin but excluding German reunification notes. Tass warned that Western force to access Berlin would trigger Soviet force and likely nuclear war, while proposing a heads of state meeting with East and West equally represented to ease tensions.
