Weather notes for Texas regions show colder start and warm Tuesday

Snyder area reports temperatures from 28 to 30 degrees and highs near 47 to 60s across Northwest Northeast and North Central Texas. Northeast and Southeast Texas expect clearing and rising 40s to 70s with frost risk tonight. Southwest Texas remains fair with frosts possible tonight and warm Tuesday.

Supreme Court strikes down ban on defense plant workers

The Supreme Court ruled 6 to 2 that a provision of the Subversive Activities Control Act barring members of Communist-action groups from defense jobs is unconstitutional. Chief Justice Warren said the law infringes First Amendment rights by guilt by association. Dissenting justices White and Harlan disagreed. Marshall did not participate.

Jaycees Set Lighting Contest Here

Snyder Jaycees sponsor their Christmas lighting contest with two divisions for local residential entries. Outdoor contest awards include first prize a yard light and second prize an electro heater. Decor contest with religious theme offers 15 dollars for first and 10 dollars for second. Derwin Thompson chairs the project and entrants must call the Chamber of Commerce to enter and be listed for judging.

Navy warns sailors about antiwar groups in Vietnam

In Saigon, the US Navy warned personnel in South Vietnam and worldwide to beware of antiwar groups trying to persuade desertion. The directive, issued last month, was linked to four sailors who deserted from the carrier Intrepid and defected to the Soviet Union.

Romney in London for British views

Governor George Romney arrived in London for two days of talks with British leaders. He said he expects to hear the British viewpoint on Vietnam international monetary affairs European American problems and the Common Market.

Storm Ravaged Florida Faces New Tornado Watch

A new tornado watch was issued for the Florida Panhandle after Sunday storms leveled hundreds of homes, killed at least two, and caused more than 7 million dollars in damage. Fort Walton Beach and Tyndall Air Force Base areas suffered heavy losses. National Guardsmen patrolled for looting as Gov. Claude Kirk sought federal aid for the disaster area.

Viet Cong suffer heavy losses in Saigon area attacks

Viet Cong troops were heavily mauled in a dawn assault on a U.S. artillery post 50 miles north of Saigon as other guerrilla units attacked outposts within 25 miles of the capital. American and South Vietnamese reports put enemy deaths over 1,200 in a week with 124 bodies found at the artillery post and seven Americans killed in the three skirmishes around Saigon.

Subterranean Wealth? Gasbuggy test may free natural gas

Scientists seek to determine if the first industrial nuclear explosion will yield new wealth from underground. A thermonuclear device was detonated 4,240 feet deep in the San Juan Basin forming a potential underground chamber for gas. Officials said no radioactivity escaped and drilling into the chamber begins next day. If feasible, national gas reserves could double. The $47 million Gasbuggy project is led by the AEC with El Paso Natural Gas Co. and the U.S. Bureau of Mines as joint sponsors.

Early Riots Report Ahead Of Schedule Says Panel

The White House panel investigating last summer's riots will release its findings and recommendations at least four months early. Chairman Gov Otto Kerner of Illinois and vice chair Mayor John V Lindsay of New York said the panel cannot delay beyond this summer. The advisory commission had been slated to report by July 29.

Texas Guard Plans Major Reorganization Across State

The Texas National Guard will begin reorganizing December 15 to 67 fewer company units and about 500 more personnel, creating three brigades under brigadier generals and eliminating division-sized units. New and relocated headquarters will be in Dallas Houston San Antonio Fort Worth Odessa El Paso Abilene and other areas with state base units expanding. Officers and enlisted surplus will be retained up to three years as the force shifts to 93 percent of wartime manpower in new units.
