The first winter storm grips Snyder with ice on streets and trees as temperatures dip to 21 degrees and hover below freezing. The Weather Bureau offers little hope for improvement in the next 24 hours, with moisture causing slick roads and travel difficulties.
Scurry County families in need are urged to visit the former Snyder Drugs building on the courthouse square to file applications. Donations welcome at the National Distributing Co. Building for clothing and food, at Snyder National Bank or West Texas State Bank for money, and at the East Fire Station for toys.
Adolf Eichmann was found guilty by a three judge Israeli tribunal on four major counts including crimes against the Jews and humanity. The court ruled he was a key cog in Hitler’s extermination regime and faces possible death by hanging with sentencing due Friday.
The Associated Press reports at least 33 people died in weekend high way crashes nationwide. Texas and North Carolina each recorded five fatalities, Illinois saw eight deaths including a mother and four children drowned on a snowy bridge approach. Oklahoma South Dakota Utah Wyoming and Tennessee each added three deaths while three accidents tied to slick conditions killed 11 more. A train collision killed three when a frost covered windshield impaired a car driver.
Navy Secretary John B. Connally Jr. will hold a 3 p.m. press conference in Fort Worth to announce whether he will seek the Texas governorship. The Fort Worth lawyer and businessman has been discussed as a possible candidate. Connally, a Johnson protege, was nominated to lead the Navy department last January.
Katanga youths attacked the U N consulate in Elisabethville and a mob stoned the U S Embassy in Brussels as the UN pressed a peace overture to halt fighting in the Congo province. Gen Sean McKeown said Tshombe has lost control while foreign mercenaries drive the clashes. U Thant and Adlai Stevenson urged a speedy, peaceful Congo settlement.
Scurry County Commissioners met this morning to approve county bills and complete the final warrant exchange for the Highway 64 by-pass. An $86 000 fund will settle pay claims on right of way for the new road. Sheriff Earl Abercrombie was authorized to obtain estimates for a porch type shelter at the jail entrance.
Scientists reported 70 percent data yield from the first underground peaceful nuclear explosion at Carlsbad New Mexico. The five kiloton device chambered at salt rock depth produced a moderate earthquake but did not harm nearby caves or mines.
